TIG-welded German aluminium Bosch SX 400Wh eMTB

The Nicolai Saturn 14 2024 is a hand-built German aluminium lightweight eMTB from boutique frame-builder Nicolai, powered by Bosch's Performance Line SX motor and a 400 Wh CompactTube battery. Headline numbers: 150 mm of fork travel, 140 mm at the rear, 55 Nm of torque, a 20.5 kg claimed weight, a 64.8 degree head angle and reach progressing 447 mm on S, 480 mm on M, 500 mm on L, 519 mm on XL and 539 mm on XXL. Saturn 14 is the shortest-travel member of Nicolai's Saturn lightweight family (sibling to the higher-travel Saturn 15 and Saturn 16), pitched as a Bosch SX trail platform rather than the Pinion MGU options elsewhere in the family.
Drive system and range. Bosch Performance Line SX delivers 55 Nm of torque, 250 W nominal and a manufacturer-claimed 600 W peak from a 2.0 kg motor. SX is Bosch's dedicated lightweight unit, sitting below the full-power CX in torque and battery draw but punching well above its weight for natural ride feel. The Bosch CompactTube 400 Wh pack is removable. Realistic range from a 400 Wh battery on the SX motor in trail use typically lands 30 to 50 km depending on terrain, assist and rider weight. For longer days, riders use the Bosch PowerMore 250 Wh range extender (lifting total to ~650 Wh) or treat the 400 Wh as the deliberate trade for the bike's exceptional 20.5 kg light weight.
Geometry and handling. A 64.8 degree head angle is in the slack end of the trail-bike envelope, slacker than typical 65 to 66 degree lightweight rivals and reflecting Nicolai's reputation for descent-biased geometry. Reach steps clean from 447 mm on S in five sizes through to 539 mm on XXL: this is one of the few platforms where genuinely tall riders can find a frame proportional to their inseam. The 452 mm chainstay is held constant across all five sizes, with wheelbases stretching 1250 to 1370 mm. As a long-term Nicolai owner notes, Saturn frames "are very long, just like other Nicolai bikes", which is the point: this is a stretched-out, stable platform.
Build and value. Nicolai sells the Saturn 14 as a custom-build frameset and complete platform starting at €7369 for the spec we have on file at 20.5 kg. The price reflects Nicolai's hand-built German manufacture: every frame is made-to-order with bespoke colours, custom geometry options and the brand's traditional engineer-led detailing. Specs are spec'd by the customer at order, which gives both freedom and the risk of mismatched component choices. At this entry price you get the chassis and SX drive unit. Higher-spec component bundles run substantially more.
Community-verified strengths. Three things owners praise. Nicolai's geometry consistency: a long-term Nicolai owner since 2014 notes that the modern Saturn keeps the brand's signature stretched-out, descent-friendly geometry. The chassis quality and hand-built construction is widely respected, with @shib documenting a custom build process from initial inquiry to delivery taking around 16 weeks. And the 20.5 kg weight on a 150/140 mm aluminium chassis is exceptional, putting the Saturn 14 in proper lightweight eMTB territory.
Caveats and known gripes. Three honest flags. The 400 Wh battery is small even by lightweight eMTB standards: a Specialized Levo SL ships with 320 Wh standard but Specialized has tightened battery efficiency, and rivals like the Trek Fuel EXe run 360 Wh on a 50 Nm motor with comparable range. Long-day riders will be using a PowerMore extender frequently. Nicolai's German-centric dealer and service network is thin outside Continental Europe: @DirkWisely notes the Saturn 16 sibling is not available for purchase in the US at all. And custom-frame lead times typically run 12 to 16 weeks from order, not 2 weeks: this is a bike for buyers who plan ahead.
Verdict. The Nicolai Saturn 14 2024 is a niche, hand-built lightweight eMTB. The strengths are real: 20.5 kg on a 150/140 mm aluminium frame, Nicolai's renowned engineer-led chassis quality, custom-build options including colours and sizing all the way to XXL (539 mm reach), and the Bosch SX motor with proven service network. The honest caveats are the 400 Wh battery, the slow custom lead time, the German-centric dealer footprint and the price premium versus mass-produced rivals at similar travel. The Saturn 14 suits the rider who wants a hand-built German lightweight chassis with Bosch SX power, accepts the 400 Wh battery (or pairs it with the PowerMore extender) and is happy with custom-build lead times. Riders prioritising bigger batteries, broader dealer support or off-the-shelf availability should look at a Trek Fuel EXe, Specialized Levo SL or Orbea Rise. Production status is current.
