Shimano EP801 enduro eMTB, 65deg HA, 160/170mm travel, configurable

The MAXX FAB.4 ELS X2 2026 is the alloy enduro entry from the niche German specialist MAXX Cycles, designed as the value alternative to their carbon FAB.4 ELA platform. Built around the Shimano EP801 motor (85 Nm torque, 250 W rated, 600 W manufacturer-claimed peak, 2.7 kg) and an 800 Wh battery. Travel is 170 mm front and 160 mm rear on an aluminium chassis with a 65 degree head angle, 455 mm chainstays flat, and reach progressing 427 mm (S), 453 mm (M), 470 mm (L), 498 mm (XL), and a properly long 525 mm (XXL). Single base trim at €5,299. The community read in one line: a genuinely competitive German-built alloy enduro with the largest available battery in the Shimano ecosystem at a sharp price, hampered only by the brand's tiny dealer network.
Drive system and range. The Shimano EP801 is the proven full-power Shimano flagship motor — 85 Nm torque, smooth and well-supported by the E-TUBE PROJECT app. The motor went through wiring harness updates over its lifecycle and is now generally reliable, though it's not as quiet as the latest Bosch CX Gen 5 or DJI Avinox. The 800 Wh battery is class-leading capacity in the Shimano ecosystem — most rivals on EP801 ship with 720 Wh. Real-world range will sit in the 50 to 75 km territory in mixed terrain on Trail/Boost mode, with extreme cases pushing further on Eco. This is genuinely a long-day enduro/all-mountain bike.
Geometry and handling. Sensibly modern. 65 degree head angle puts the bike firmly in the trail/enduro middle ground, neither slack-bro nor steep-XC. The reach range is the standout — 427 mm (S) up to 525 mm (XXL) is one of the most generous size spreads in the European enduro eMTB market, catering for both shorter and very tall riders. Chainstays held at 455 mm flat across all five sizes is the one geometry compromise, as no size-tuning at this travel category by 2026 standards is increasingly rare. Wheelbase scales from 1222 mm (S) to a properly stretched 1346 mm (XXL).
Build and value. Single base trim at €5,299. At this price expect RockShox or Fox suspension at 170 mm front and 160 mm rear (typically RockShox Zeb Select or Fox 38 Performance class), four-piston brakes with 200 mm+ rotors, and a Shimano XT/Deore 12-speed drivetrain matched to the EP801 motor. €5,299 for an alloy 170/160 mm enduro with the 800 Wh Shimano battery is genuinely competitive value, especially given the five-size range from S to XXL.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Tiny dealer network. MAXX Cycles is a small German specialist brand with very limited international presence — warranty work and motor service in the UK, US or outside central Europe depends heavily on remote support.
- Fixed 455 mm chainstays across all five sizes. Smaller riders won't get the agility of a sub-440 mm rear-centre, and the very largest XXL would benefit from a 460+ mm rear-centre for stability.
- Shimano EP801 motor is reliable post-firmware updates but is not the newest motor tech. Bosch CX Gen 5 and DJI Avinox now lead the segment for refinement and peak output.
- No community forum data yet. Long-term reliability and ownership patterns will accumulate through 2026.
Verdict. The MAXX FAB.4 ELS X2 2026 is a properly considered niche-German alloy enduro for buyers who value the brand's engineering pedigree, who appreciate the five-size range from S to XXL, and who can either live with remote warranty support or have local dealer access in the DACH region. It suits intermediate-to-advanced riders prioritising battery capacity, sensible geometry and value over headline motor specs or carbon weight. Look elsewhere if you need a wide dealer network, the latest motor tech, or size-tuned chainstays. Production status: current, single base trim, five sizes.
