EMTB Forums verdict

The KTM Macina Race was the brand's budget entry into electric mountain biking for 2023, a no-nonsense aluminium hardtail built around the legacy (non-Smart System) Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 motor, a 500Wh PowerTube battery and a simple Purion display. It sat below the alloy Macina Team hardtail and the full-suspension Macina Chacana/Scarp, trading interactivity and battery size for a keener price just around the 3,000 euro mark.

The build is deliberately frugal: a coil-sprung SR Suntour XCM fork with 100mm of travel, a 9-speed Shimano Alivio drivetrain, two-piston MT200 brakes and Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres. The geometry is firmly cross-country and tour focused rather than aggressive, with a relaxed 70.5 to 71 degree head angle, a 73 degree seat angle, long 465mm chainstays and a modest reach (396 to 431mm across M to XL). Mudguard and rack mounts mean it doubles as an everyday commuter.

Two builds were offered: the 592 on 29in wheels and the 572 on 27.5in, each with a 'Glorious' colourway option. It is well suited to riders wanting a stable, durable first eMTB for forest tracks and towpaths rather than technical trails. It is now discontinued; KTM later moved the range to Bosch Smart System hardware and introduced the lightweight Bosch SX-powered Macina Race SX as the spiritual successor, though that is a distinctly different, sportier machine.

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Descending
37

Steeper 71° and shorter travel — happiest descending smooth, flowy trail rather than properly rough or steep terrain.

Playfulness
58

A fair bit of pop, but happiest on flowing trail rather than trials moves.

Size balance
12

Rear-long with a planted front in L (FC:RC 1.39) — easy to weight the front and quick to turn, though it can feel light at the back at real speed.

Technical climbing
72

Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 4 and a steep 73° seat angle keep the weight planted over the front — a proper winch. 600W of peak power and 85Nm of torque — a strong full-power motor.

Best suited toAll-round trail riding across mixed terrain.

No single standout trait — a balanced, versatile bike.

Watch out forNot built for serious descending — happier on flow than in the rough and steep.

Fine at trail pace; it'll feel out of its depth on properly rough, steep tracks.
