EMTB Forums verdict

The Giant Trance X E+ (2023) was the alloy, full-power version of Giant's trail E-MTB family, sitting below the carbon Trance X Advanced E+ models. It uses an ALUXX SL-grade aluminium frame with 140mm of Maestro rear travel, a 150mm fork and a full 29in wheel setup, driven by the SyncDrive Pro2 motor (85Nm, co-developed with Yamaha) and a sizeable integrated 800Wh EnergyPak. The frame adds a UDH rear axle and is compatible with the EnergyPak Plus 250 range extender.

The UK range ran two trims off the same frame, motor and battery. The Trance X E+ 1 at £5,999 was the flagship, with a Fox 36 Float Performance fork, Fox Float X air shock, Shimano Deore XT four-piston brakes on a 220/203mm rotor set, Deore XT 12-speed shifting and a Tranz-X Rad+ travel-adjustable dropper. The Trance X E+ 2 at £5,499 stepped down to a Fox 36 Float Rhythm fork, Float Performance shock, Shimano SLX shifting with Deore four-piston brakes on 203mm rotors and a Giant Contact Switch dropper, making it the value pick.

Geometry is adjustable via a flip chip giving a slacker, lower setting (around 65.7 to 65.8 degrees head angle, 30mm BB drop) and a steeper, higher setting (66.5 degrees, 20mm BB drop). Reach on a size L runs 482mm in Low and 489mm in High, with consistent 473mm chainstays across all sizes and a 1268 to 1301mm wheelbase, giving a stable but not extreme trail position. Both trims share Maxxis Minion DHF / Dissector 2.6in tyres and a Giant Contact 35 cockpit.

This generation is now discontinued and appears at clearance pricing. It remains of interest as a relatively affordable, big-battery (800Wh) full-power 29er trail E-MTB for riders who want SyncDrive Pro2 power and long range in an alloy frame, without paying for the lighter carbon Advanced versions.

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Setting
Descending
59

A solid all-round descender (65.8° head angle, 140mm) — capable in the rough and steep without being an all-out bruiser.

Playfulness
31

More planted than poppy — better on steep terrain than tight, fiddly singletrack.

Size balance
78

Rear-long with a planted front in L (FC:RC 1.68) — easy to weight the front and quick to turn, though it can feel light at the back at real speed.

Technical climbing
77

Giant SyncDrive Pro2 and a steep 76° seat angle keep the weight planted over the front — a proper winch. 250W of peak power and 85Nm of torque — a strong full-power motor.

Best suited toBig-day all-rounders who climb a lot and still descend hard.

Strong up and composed down — a do-it-all, not a specialist.

Watch out forNot a flickable, playful bike — built to plough, not pop.

Brilliant on fast, rough, steep terrain; less fun on tight, mellow trails.

⚙️ Adjustable geometry: this frame has a high/low setting — low drops the BB and slackens the head angle for more descending stability; high lifts the BB and steepens slightly for clearance and a perkier, more playful feel.
Computed from geometry + spec, not a paid review. Scores are guidance, not gospel.
