EMTB Forums verdict

The 2023 Focus SAM2 was the brand's aluminium e-enduro, rebuilt around the F.O.L.D. linkage with 170 mm of travel front and rear on 29in wheels and a Bosch Performance Line CX motor (85 Nm) fed by an integrated, removable 625 Wh PowerTube. Focus kept the cockpit deliberately simple, specifying Bosch's pared-back Purion display across the whole range. The geometry was firmly descent-focused, with a slack head angle, a long wheelbase and a FOCUS Flip Chip that switches between a 64.1 degree high setting (29in, 450 mm chainstays) and a 64.8 degree low setting (430 mm chainstays) and also allows a 27.5in mullet rear wheel.

The 2023 launch range ran three aluminium builds, all on the 625 Wh Purion package. The 6.7 was the value pick with a RockShox Domain R fork, RockShox Deluxe Select shock, SRAM NX Eagle shifting and SRAM Guide T brakes at a claimed 25.3 kg. The mid 6.8 stepped up to a RockShox ZEB fork with a Super Deluxe Select+ air shock, SRAM GX Eagle and SRAM Code R brakes on Schwalbe Magic Mary rubber. The flagship 6.9 added a FOX 38 Factory Grip 2 fork in Racing Orange, a FOX Van Performance coil shock, Shimano XT shifting and XT four-piston brakes, weighing a claimed 26.2 kg.

At UK launch the SAM2 started from 4,699 GBP for the 6.7, with the 6.8 at 5,199 GBP, undercutting much of the direct-sales competition for a full-power 170 mm e-enduro. It is now discontinued. It was superseded within the same model name by a revised SAM2 that moved to Bosch's Smart System, gained a 180 mm fork and 750 Wh battery option, switched the Flip Chip for an angle-adjust headset, and later added a Bosch CX Race flagship.

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Descending
84

Slack 64.1° head angle, 170mm travel and a long 1273mm wheelbase — composed in the chunk, confident when it gets steep, and stable through fast corners.

Playfulness
22

More planted than poppy — better on steep terrain than tight, fiddly singletrack.

Size balance
89

Balanced front-to-rear in L (FC:RC 1.83) — weight sits evenly between the wheels.

Technical climbing
62

Climbs well — a 75.1° seat keeps the front planted. 600W of peak power and 85Nm of torque — a strong full-power motor.

Best suited toFast, steep, rough tracks — and riders who want maximum composure.

Rewards commitment; it should feel calmer as the speed rises.

Watch out forNot a flickable, playful bike at 25.3kg — built to plough, not pop.

Brilliant on fast, rough, steep terrain; less fun on tight, mellow trails.

⚙️ Adjustable geometry: this frame has a high/low setting — low drops the BB and slackens the head angle for more descending stability; high lifts the BB and steepens slightly for clearance and a perkier, more playful feel.
