EMTB Forums verdict

The Canyon Spectral:ON 2025 is the brand's mixed-wheel enduro eMTB, built around the Shimano EP801 motor (85 Nm, 250 W rated, 600 W manufacturer-claimed peak, 2.7 kg) and an 800 Wh Canyon BT010 battery. Travel is 160 mm front and 155 mm rear on a carbon chassis with a 4-bar suspension layout. Eight trims from £3,749 to £8,499, head angle 64.5 to 65.5 degrees, reach 430 to 510 mm across the size range, chainstays 440 to 455 mm. Claimed weight 22.5 kg at the base trim. The community read in one line: brilliant ride feel and great value direct-to-consumer pricing, but the Shimano EP801 has shown reliability gremlins and there's a major Canyon battery recall casting a shadow over current ownership.

Drive system and range. The EP801 is Shimano's flagship eMTB motor — quiet, smooth, with 85 Nm of torque. The 800 Wh battery is class-leading capacity and removable. Real-world range is strong; @Edge reports 70 to 75 km in trail mode on the older 900 Wh battery at 100 kg rider weight. But reliability is the big asterisk. @Winford documents a motor replacement, three wiring harness replacements and a battery recall on one bike in a single year, with three riders reporting similar shut-off problems. @digitale confirms the shutoff issue is a bad wiring harness Shimano is replacing under warranty.

Geometry and handling. Mixed-wheel (29 front / 27.5 rear) on most builds, with a flip-chip that swings head angle from 65.5 degrees (SM) to 64.5 degrees in the slacker setting. Reach steps through 430 mm (S), 460 mm (M), and up to 510 mm (XL). Chainstays scale 440 to 455 mm and wheelbase from 1194 to 1330 mm, which gives proper size-specific feel — small riders get a flickable bike, XL riders get genuine stability. @Dhd12 notes the 155 mm rear suspension eliminates pedal strikes on his bike. The geometry is genuinely modern and well-judged for enduro use.

Build and value. The eight-trim ladder is dense. The base CF (£3,749) gets you a Fox 38 Rhythm fork and Float X Performance shock with Shimano SLX 4-piston rear / 2-piston front brakes and a Shimano XT/SLX 12-speed mix. The CF 7 at £5,499 and the CFR at £5,599 (23.9 kg) jump to RockShox Lyrik Ultimate Flight Attendant suspension and SRAM XX1 AXS wireless drivetrain. The £8,499 CFR top trim drops to 21.5 kg with the best parts. The CF base trim at £3,749 is the standout value play in the entire 2025 full-power enduro category — there is no cheaper way into 160/155 mm carbon with a name-brand motor.

Community-verified strengths.

  • @TKB after his first ride on the CF7: "what a bike!! Plush ride but still playful. And a very quiet motor!" The ride quality and EP801 motor refinement are praised consistently.
  • @Scott_123 reports the Spectral:ONfly CFR with SRAM GX drivetrain maintained identical performance after 2,000+ miles with no degradation — strong long-term durability on the drivetrain.
  • Direct-to-consumer pricing across eight trims gives unmatched value-per-spec in the 160/155 mm carbon enduro category.

Caveats and known gripes.

  • @WTFhaveIbought documented the Canyon battery safety recall: 900 Wh compensation deadline 31 October 2025, 720 Wh deadline 31 December 2025, with the entire compensation programme ending 31 December 2025. This is the most serious caveat in the entire Canyon eMTB range right now.
  • EP801 wiring harness failures are well-documented across multiple owners. Service costs are covered by Shimano warranty but downtime is real.
  • Canyon's direct-to-consumer support model means no local dealer — warranty work goes via Canyon's service network, which can be slow.

Verdict. The Spectral:ON 2025 is the best-value full-power carbon enduro on the market and the ride quality genuinely competes with bikes costing twice as much. Buy it if you can stomach the direct-to-consumer service model, can wait through potential warranty turnarounds, and are buying a post-recall battery. Look elsewhere if you ride competitively and downtime is a deal-breaker, or if you want the absolute newest motor tech (DJI Avinox, Bosch CX Gen 5 at 120 Nm). Production status: current, eight trims, 20 size/colour combinations.
