All-day power, everyday adventure

The Canyon Neuron:ON 2025 is an aluminium trail eMTB built around the new Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 motor and a removable 800Wh PowerTube battery. Headline numbers: 150mm fork, 145mm rear, 120Nm at the wheel from CX Gen 5, 25.2 to 25.34kg claimed on the AL 9 trim, 64.5 degree head angle and reach 418 to 510mm across XS to XL. From GBP 3,999 for the AL 7 through GBP 4,499 (AL 8) and GBP 5,149 (AL 9 and AL trim). The community read is that this is one of 2025's strongest direct-to-consumer trail eMTB value plays: an EMBN comparison test singled out the AL 7 as a standout for the price thanks to the Gen 5 motor.
Drive system and range. The Bosch CX Gen 5 is the headline. Following Bosch's PU2.0 firmware push, the legacy 85Nm Gen 4 has been retired and the Gen 5 sits at 120Nm and 750W peak with a dynamic mode that ramps assist far more naturally than its predecessor. The 800Wh PowerTube battery is, per the gold spec, removable: a meaningful change over the older Neuron:ON CF on Bosch Gen 4, where battery removability was a persistent owner gripe, as a forum thread on the previous-generation model recorded with riders disappointed by the non-removable design. @drocho notes the CF was withdrawn in May 2025, leaving the AL and the lighter Neuron:ONfly (Bosch SX, 400Wh + 250Wh extender) as the surviving family members. Range on the 800Wh is broadly two to four hours of mixed UK trail riding depending on rider weight and mode discipline.
Geometry and handling. 64.5 degrees up front is a touch slacker than typical 140 to 150mm trail bikes and gives the Neuron:ON a more confident steep-descent posture than a Trek Fuel EXe or Specialized Levo SL. Reach steps are honest: 418 (XS), 433 (S), 460 (M), 485 (L) and 510 (XL). Chainstays grow from 452 to 455mm with frame size, which is a thoughtful touch for proportional balance. Wheelbase tops out at 1314mm on XL. XS and S run 27.5in wheels; M and up run 29in. Aluminium frame with Cat 3 testing and integrated kickstand and rear-rack mounts mark this out as a trail bike with practical commuting credentials, not a pure shred sled.
Build and value. Four trims in tight bands. AL 7 (GBP 3,999) is the headline price: Gen 5 CX with 800Wh removable battery under GBP 4,000 is genuinely market-breaking. AL 8 (GBP 4,499) steps up the suspension and finishing kit. AL 9 (GBP 5,149) brings RockShox Lyrik Base 150mm with a Rush RC damper, RockShox Deluxe Select shock, SRAM DB8 Stealth 4-piston brakes on 200mm CenterLine rotors and the SRAM S1000 AXS Eagle Transmission. The AL trim mirrors AL 9 in build at the same price. Standout: SRAM AXS Transmission at this price point is rare. Questionable: SRAM DB8 mineral-oil brakes are competent but not Maven-tier, and 25kg+ is on the heavier side of the alloy trail-bike class.
Community-verified strengths.
- Direct-to-consumer pricing. A second-hand comparison from @Rockhopper70 on the Neuron:ONfly stablemate calls Canyon "an incredible bargain" at this price tier; the AL 7 doubles down with full-power Bosch.
- Gen 5 motor. An EMBN comparison praised the AL 7 highly for the new motor at the price.
- Removable 800Wh battery. Direct response to long-running owner complaints about non-removable Spectral:ON, Torque:ON and older Neuron:ON CF batteries.
Caveats and known gripes.
- Canyon's service reputation. One older AL owner reports a three-week unresolved battery issue with the service centre on the previous Neuron:ON. Canyon's direct-to-consumer model means no local dealer to lean on.
- Weight. 25.2 to 25.34kg is heavy for a 145mm rear-travel bike, especially against carbon rivals.
- Headset cable routing. Per @drocho, the budget AL has headset-routed cables, which complicates basic bar swaps and fork servicing.
- SR Suntour-free build but Lyrik Base rather than Ultimate. The fork is competent but not class-leading.
Verdict. The 2025 Neuron:ON AL is the strongest Bosch Gen 5 trail bike under GBP 5,200 in the direct-to-consumer market, with a removable 800Wh battery, AXS Transmission and modern geometry. It suits riders who value spec and price over showroom proximity. Buyers who need a dealer relationship, the lightest possible bike or non-headset routing should look elsewhere. Production status: current.
