EMTB Forums verdict

The Canyon Grand Canyon:ON 2026 is the Koblenz brand's relaunched alloy hardtail eMTB: a 25.3 kg, 120 mm Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 trail bike starting at just £2,649. Headline numbers are Bosch's flagship 120 Nm/750 W peak motor, an 800 Wh PowerTube battery (with optional 250 Wh range extender to 1,050 Wh), 29 x 2.6-inch tyres and 8 size points spread across SM through XL. The community sees this as one of the best-value full-power hardtails on sale, and a sensible entry point into the eMTB world for buyers who want a do-it-all platform without the cost of a full-suspension build.

Drive system and range. The new Bosch CX Gen 5 is the headline upgrade over previous generations of the Grand Canyon:ON. 120 Nm of torque, 750 W peak (the gold-listed manufacturer figure) and a 2.8 kg unit weight make this the most powerful Bosch yet, post-PU2.0 firmware. The 800 Wh PowerTube battery is removable, which sets the bike apart from many full-power competitors with integrated batteries, and the optional range extender pushes total capacity to 1,050 Wh. Bosch's Smart System ecosystem, eBike Flow app and digitally-operated lock are all integrated. Bosch eBike battery longevity is well documented on the forum: @CJaMTB sold a 750 Wh Smart System battery after 2.5 years of riding with no issues, a useful proxy for what to expect from the new 800 Wh unit.

Geometry and handling. A 66.5 degree head angle marks this as a trail hardtail, not an enduro. It will climb confidently and descend with composure on mixed terrain without being scary on steep technical descents. Reach progresses sensibly: 419 mm (SM), 439 mm (MD), 458 mm (LG), 478 mm (XL). The 469 mm chainstay is held constant across sizes — long enough for traction on steep climbs but proportionally long on smaller frames. Wheelbase grows from 1,198 mm to 1,275 mm. Eight size points (with two of each letter denoting different stack/reach trims) is unusually generous and means most riders will find a clean fit. The 29 x 2.6-inch tyre spec adds volume and forgiveness on a hardtail, a sensible choice.

Build and value. Two named trims are listed in the gold spec. The £2,649 AL 7 is the entry point: SR Suntour XCM34 Coil fork, Shimano MT200 brakes with 180 mm rotors and Shimano Deore M6100 12-speed. The £3,299 AL is the same chassis with similar core spec at 24.5 kg. Within Canyon's wider lineup, an AL 8 trim moves to Fox 34 AWL fork and Magura MT Thirty 4-piston brakes with 203 mm rotors, and an AL 9 to Fox 34, Magura CTE ABS brakes and Deore XT. The AL 8 is generally the value sweet spot if a buyer can stretch — the brake upgrade alone is worth it on a Gen 5 Bosch hardtail.

Community-verified strengths. Bosch motor reliability remains the brand's calling card and 800 Wh removable battery is a genuine practical advantage over integrated-battery rivals. The five mount points (bottles, range extender, trailer, kickstand, computer) and digitally-operated lock make this a serious bikepacking/utility platform as well as a trail toy. Canyon's eight sizes are class-leading for fit.

Caveats and known gripes. Hardtails on EP8-era electronics had documented teething issues on previous Grand Canyon:ON generations: @KristofH reported a display going black and motor restart events on a previous-gen Grand Canyon:ON 9 with EP8 firmware 4.1.8. That was on the older Shimano platform — the new bike runs Bosch CX Gen 5, which has a different firmware lineage. Hardtails are inherently more demanding on the rider over rough terrain than full-suspension equivalents, so buyers crossing from full-sus should test ride. The base AL 7's coil-sprung XCM34 fork and 180 mm rotors are a clear cost-saving and will limit aggressive descending. Direct-to-consumer servicing means UK buyers should factor in dealer-equivalent maintenance.

Verdict. The Canyon Grand Canyon:ON 2026 is one of the best-value full-power eMTB hardtails on sale. Bosch CX Gen 5 power, a removable 800 Wh battery and eight sizes for under £3,000 (or £3,300 for the better-equipped AL) is a hard combination to beat. It will suit buyers entering full-power eMTB ownership on a budget, riders who want a versatile utility platform, and anyone who values Bosch's reliability record. Aggressive enduro and downhill riders should look at the Spectral:ON or Torque:ON full-suspension models instead. Production status: current.

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Descending
49

A solid all-round descender (66.5° head angle, 120mm) — capable in the rough and steep without being an all-out bruiser.

Playfulness
53

A fair bit of pop, but happiest on flowing trail rather than trials moves.

Size balance
72

Rear-long with a planted front in L (FC:RC 1.65) — easy to weight the front and quick to turn, though it can feel light at the back at real speed.

Technical climbing
88

Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5 and a steep 76° seat angle keep the weight planted over the front — a proper winch. 750W of peak power and 120Nm of torque — among the most powerful e-bike motors made.

Best suited toAll-round trail riding across mixed terrain.

No single standout trait — a balanced, versatile bike.

Watch out forNo major red flags in the L geometry.

The numbers are well balanced for its category.
