EMTB Forums verdict

The iLynx Trail is BH's mid-power trail platform, built around the in-house BHZ drive unit (a SEG Automotive motor rated at 65 Nm and up to 500 W) and a 630 Wh down-tube battery, with an optional 180 Wh XPro range extender. It sits below the full-power iLynx+ NX as the lighter, lower-torque option for riders who want a more natural-feeling assist on 29in wheels.

The range splits into alloy and HCIM carbon frames across two travel tiers. The 7.9, 8.0, 8.1 and Carbon 8.5 run 140 mm forks, while the 8.2, Carbon 8.7 and Carbon 8.9 step up to a 150 mm FOX 36. All builds share the Split Pivot suspension, 451 mm chainstays, a 66 degree head angle and a 75.5 degree seat angle through the four sizes, so the handling brief stays consistent as you climb the line.

Value is strongest in the middle of the range. The alloy 8.2 pairs the FOX 36 with SRAM DB8 four-piston brakes and a Shimano XT derailleur, while Carbon 8.7 adds the carbon frame, a FOX FLOAT X shock and 203 mm rotors. The flagship Carbon 8.9 moves to FOX Factory suspension, a fuller Shimano XT groupset and Race Face Turbine wheels. Entry alloy builds drop to Deore drivetrains and RockShox or SR Suntour forks, keeping the 7.9 close to £3,200.

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Descending
58

A solid all-round descender (66° head angle, 150mm) — capable in the rough and steep without being an all-out bruiser.

Playfulness
46

A fair bit of pop, but happiest on flowing trail rather than trials moves.

Size balance
87

Rear-long with a planted front in L (FC:RC 1.72) — easy to weight the front and quick to turn, though it can feel light at the back at real speed.

Technical climbing
70

Climbs well — a 75.5° seat keeps the front planted. 500W of peak power and 65Nm of torque.

Best suited toAll-round trail riding across mixed terrain.

No single standout trait — a balanced, versatile bike.

Watch out forNo major red flags in the L geometry.

The numbers are well balanced for its category.
