EMTB Forums verdict

The BH iLynx Trail (2023) is the full-alloy version of BH's lightweight Split Pivot trail platform. Unlike the carbon iLynx Trail and the carbon-front AtomX Lynx Pro, this one is built around a 140 mm aluminium frame (150 mm on the range-topping 8.2) with a 29in SuperBoost rear end, short 451 mm chainstays and a sensibly slack 66 degree head angle. It is a genuinely distinct catalogue model, not a rebadge of the AtomX bikes.

What sets it apart is the drive system. Rather than the 90 Nm Brose-derived motor of the AtomX line, the iLynx Trail runs BH's own lightweight in-house BHZ drive (badged 2EXMAG-II / 2EXMag Gen 2, 65 Nm) fed by a 540 Wh internal pack, with an optional 180 Wh XPro range extender taking total capacity to 720 Wh. The result is a noticeably lighter, more natural-feeling trail bike that trades outright torque for a tidier package.

Three trims spanned the range: the 8.0 (RockShox Recon, Shimano Deore 11-speed, £5,099.90), the 8.1 (Fox 34 Rhythm, Shimano XT 12-speed, £5,699.90) and the 8.2 (Fox 36 Performance 150 mm, SRAM DB8 brakes, £6,199.90).

This is a discontinued 2023 model, long replaced in BH's current iLynx range, so availability is limited to second-hand and old stock.

Geometry read

What the numbers mean on the trail

Computed from this bike's geometry, spec and build kit — reach, wheelbase, chainstay, head and seat angles, travel, motor, weight and the fork/tyre/brake spec — and worked out per size, because a fixed chainstay can make an S and an XL feel very different.

Size
Descending
58

A solid all-round descender (66° head angle, 140mm) — capable in the rough and steep without being an all-out bruiser.

Playfulness
47

A fair bit of pop, but happiest on flowing trail rather than trials moves.

Size balance
60

Not enough geometry on record to judge size balance.

Technical climbing
38

A workmanlike climber — expect to put in more rider effort on the steep stuff. 500W of peak power and 65Nm of torque.

Best suited toAll-round trail riding across mixed terrain.

No single standout trait — a balanced, versatile bike.

Watch out forClimbing leans on the rider more than the motor.

Lower torque or a slacker seat angle — fine, just don't expect a winch.
