Wired E-Bikes honest review?

I have been looking at a number of videos about Wired E-Bikes. The videos look good but I am looking for something other than a sales pitch. If you have any experience with a wired ebike, please give me your opinion!

They're not really e bikes as most people on here would refer to them, they're more e motorbikes, or e mopeds, ie legally distinct (in most countries) from what most people refer to as ebikes.

That was my first impression also. But it does have a PAS setup, maybe a cheap gear set up (which can be replaced). I am thinking mire in terms of battery and power. We don’t do single track any longer ( since turning 80) but still love riding fire roads and jeep trails in the mountains. Just looking for more power than I am getting with my 1kw current bike.

That could suit your style of riding. It may also limit you to some areas.

Since your best 20+ years are ahead of you, you may want something that doesn’t feel like a heavy motor cycle. There are many mid-drive light eMTB that are suitable for fire roads, tame trails, and even pavement, with the right tires.

My very first eBike purchase (his/hers) was a pair of mid-drive fat tire street capable bikes from Trek. I returned both of those the next day. They were probably 70+lbs each.

I exchanged them for a pair of Hard Tail Powerfly’s with the Bosch Gen4 CX. Those were around $4300 each CDN. My wife still has the Powerfly and I upgraded to the Fuel EXE 8. They are capable of any type of riding but we are governed by the 32kph speed limit.

That speed is more than enough for us but the power is there when we want it.

I did take a look (on line) at the Fuel EXE 8 and it looks like a nice bike. I am not sure that I want to be picking up a 115 lb bike. We tend to like to pedal at a speed around 17 mph or about 27 kph. Not really interested in the go fast perspective, however there is this seemingly gigantic 25 degree hill getting up to our cabin that I would like to tame.

I wonder if I should start a new thread looking for a relatively lightweight but powerful hardtail e-bike. That steep hill requires the granny gear now and after a long ride is a walk up.

That's your problem right there....

There's only 1 way to get more power, which is more weight, more battery, more motor. Technology isn't advanced enough to give a lightweight super powerful bike..

The closest you'll get is an Amflow.

We have a few steep fire roads here (15-17% grade) that become a challenge for my 85nm mid-drive Bosch CX. All other bikes (and some eMTBs ) are walking up this section. Most mid-drive (85-110nm) can make it up with some effort and proper gearing. I can make it up with the Fuel EXE 8 but that takes even more effort.

I’m not a big fan of a heavy hub-drive ebike. It’s definitely not for me. If I was still hunting for large animals I might consider one. But I had an ATV for that.

So there’s a trade-off. My Fuel EXE 8 has two sets of wheels depending on the type of riding I expect. Will I be riding solo on our mountain trails, or will I be riding with my wife on the tame local trails and some pavement.

IMO there are about 5 good eMTB models and motors to choose from.(50lbs). And then there’s the lightweight category. (40lbs).

@Cybersnow You could kill yourself on that thing. I have lost count of the number of times I have had an involuntary dismount and the bloody bike landed on top of me! OUCH! There are loads of VERY mich lighter emtbs that will give you all the torque you need.

I think I have to agree! While I had no intention of riding it like a moped, I would probably fall over lifting it ip on a bike rack. I think 50-60 lbs is my weight limit. Guess I need to keep searching.

The RadPower Radster might be worth considering. Hub drive, powerful, reliable, inexpensive and they have retailers in Idaho (HQ in Seattle with a full retail store there as well). It is heavy at around 78 lbs though. I test rode one in Seattle including on a pretty steep hill, fun bike, handled the hills no problem:

They also have a road/city version with thinner tires then their trail version, I test rode the road version and preferred it to the trail version:

My wife has an older RadPower Rad Rover 6 fat tire e-bike and it's been great for paved roads/trails as well as forest roads and easy trails. We both love it. It's not a high performance single track bike, but it is very good for what it is.

We are considering upgrading my wife's Rad Power 6 to something lighter with a more sophisticated mid-drive motor, but every time we ride it we have so much fun on it we decide to hold off on the expensive upgrade for a while longer.

Good luck with your new e-bike hunt and I think its great that you're still cycling at your age, I'm 6'4 and I hope to be cycling for many more years.
