Thinking of swapping the SX shifter on my Rail 5 to a GX. Can the cable inner simply be threaded through the existing outer routing in the bike and pop out at the right place?....or is the job more painful?

The cut end of the inner cable will score the outer lining, even if it didn't unravel, and will not (in my experience) make it round the pulley wheel on the mech. Just buy a new cable (and it might come with an end cap).

Cheers@KennyB, I’m swapping the mech as well, I just don’t want to have to mess about with the outer cable sheath on the bike. I was thinking I could pull out the existing inner and thread my new GX inner cable through. A little bit of tape on the cut end stops the cable fray on the analogue bikes I’ve done.
