Yup, for me whilst the spread of the gears is fine, the jump between the cogs is too much, meaning that I often wanted another gear between the two on offer so to speak. Also replacement cassettes are crazy expensive, and I also find that sram ebike shifters really annoying because you cant shift multiple gears at once as a "safety feature".
 
I would add though that I think there is some sound thinking in having a lower number of gears and a tougher drivetrain, if it was 10 speed rather than eight it would be much better IMO.
 
Also had the same idea upgrading GX to EX1, but I quickly scrapped that idea as I read many user comments on forums which more or less not having exactly good experiences with it, some also asking if its worth buying another EX1 cassette or better swapping to different drivetrain ... it looks like EX1 is difficult drivetrain to setup properly and cassette is not as long lasting as it is very expensive ...
