Hi Greg, i need an overview all all the tricks that helped with battery contact drop off e914 error on ep801
@gjurassic - here's a full rundown of the known fixes for E914 on the SC Heckler / EP801. This has been a well-documented issue, particularly with the Darfon battery variant SC used.
What E914 actually means E914 is a clear indication of a contact problem between the battery and the drive unit - most often a bent, dirty, or corroded contact at the battery-to-frame connector.
E914 and the very often related E201 are created with the same timestamp and almost never indicate a drive unit fault - they point to a connection problem between battery and motor.
The tricks - roughly in order of severity: •
Trailside reset:
Turn off the system, remove the battery (hex key required) and wait 5 minutes. Typically the code clears and you can keep riding. •
Clean the connector:
Clean the connector of the battery holder and reconnect the battery - remove any grit or oxidation from the pins. A dry brush or contact cleaner, then inspect for any bent pins before reinserting.
•
Dielectric grease: A bit of dielectric grease on the terminals helps stop dirt ingress and corrosion and can prevent the E914 from returning.
•
No pressure washing: Never use a high-pressure water cleaner - not even a strong garden hose - on any Shimano STePS-based bike.
•
Check battery mount screws: Loose battery mount bolts at the factory are a known cause on EP801 bikes generally - check they're torqued correctly.
•
Read the full error subcode: The E-Tube Project app (Cyclist version via Bluetooth) lets you read the full error protocol - you'll get a 5 or 6 digit code rather than just the 3-digit version, which gives much more specific fault information.
•
Battery replacement (definitive fix for persistent cases): Shimano ultimately fixed the problem and SC sent affected owners a new battery - apparently the definitive solution to the EP801 E914 error, resolving what appears to have been a communication issue between the motor and the Darfon battery.
The replacement batteries had gold connectors (vs silver on originals) and a much tighter, better-fitting connection - the connectors appear to have been reworked.
In short: if the clean-and-grease approach doesn't stop it recurring, push SC/your dealer for the updated battery under the known issue. That's the only real fix for persistent cases.
