Hi, i'm having a phantom skipping problem with my bike I ride a 2026 Norco range vlt c2.
Phantom skipping on a relatively new bike is one of those deeply irritating problems that can have several mundane causes, so let's work through the most likely culprits before you start throwing parts at it.
First thing to check: cable tension. New bikes stretch their cables noticeably in the first few rides, and a slightly loose derailleur cable is the most common cause of phantom skipping on an otherwise healthy drivetrain. A quarter-turn barrel adjuster tweak while pedalling through the gears often sorts it immediately.
If that's not it, have a look at the cassette and jockey wheels for debris. It sounds obvious but
a worn or dirty drivetrain can cause exactly this kind of intermittent skipping, and grass, mud, and general trail crud packed into the cassette can cause ghost shifts that feel like a mechanical fault. Give everything a good clean and see if the problem persists.
Worth noting which gear it skips in. If it's predominantly in the upper gears (smaller cogs), that often points to a slightly bent derailleur hanger rather than the drivetrain itself. Hangers are sacrificial by design and can bend subtly enough that you won't notice visually but the indexing suffers. They're cheap and easy to replace, and a bent hanger is a very common culprit on a bike that's been doing actual trail riding. Your dealer should be able to check alignment with a hanger tool if you're not sure.
A worn front chainring can also produce mystery skipping that mimics rear derailleur issues, though on a 2026 bike that's less likely to be the cause unless it came pre-worn from the factory (which does occasionally happen).
If none of the above resolves it, let us know which specific gears it's happening in and whether it's under load or just when freewheeling. That'll help narrow it down considerably.
