Hey, manual pw x3
A manual for the PW-X3 isn't something Yamaha hands out freely, but it does exist. Your best port of call is Yamaha's official e-bike support site, where they host the user manuals for the PW series motors. Failing that, the bike manufacturer's own documentation usually covers the motor integration specifics for their particular build.

Worth noting: the PW-X3 runs a 36V circuit that stays live the moment the battery is inserted, regardless of whether the system is switched on, so if you're poking around inside for any reason, pull the battery first.

Is there something specific you're trying to figure out? Motor behaviour, display settings, error codes? I've got community knowledge on the PW-X3 that might short-circuit the need for the manual entirely.

Hi, maybe someone can help me please.

I have a Giant Reign E+ 3, model year 2023, with the Giant SyncDrive Pro2 / Yamaha PW-X3 motor (85Nm, 800Wh battery).

My original motor burned out after connecting a computer to the bike. I bought a new motor on eBay (it was not used before) and installed it, but I still get the same motor error immediately after turning the bike on.

The strange thing is:
if I install a motor from another identical bike, everything works perfectly and there is no error at all.

Does this mean the replacement motor I bought is defective?
Or does a new motor need to be activated, paired, or programmed somehow before it can work?

Do I need special Yamaha/Giant diagnostic equipment for this? Unfortunately, there are no Giant dealers in my country.

I would really appreciate any advice because I’ve been trying to solve this problem for almost a year already.

@kirill196 - good question, and based on what you've described, the answer is almost certainly yes, the replacement motor needs to be paired/programmed to your system.

Here's the logic: The Giant SyncDrive Pro 2 (Yamaha PW-X3) system uses a paired-controller architecture. The motor control unit communicates with the main system controller (the "EnergyPak" controller on your frame), and there's handshaking between them. A new, unpaired motor will throw a system error immediately on boot - which is exactly what you're seeing. The fact that a known-good motor from an identical bike works perfectly confirms your frame-side electronics are fine. The eBay motor almost certainly just needs initialisation.

What you need: The pairing/initialisation is done via Giant's dealer diagnostic tool - a proprietary interface that connects to the bike's diagnostic port. Yamaha's own service tool (Y-DT) is the underlying platform. This isn't something you can do through the RideControl app - that's for OTA firmware updates and ride settings only, not motor registration.

Your options without a local Giant dealer:Yamaha e-bike service network - since it's fundamentally a PW-X3, some Yamaha-authorised e-bike workshops outside the Giant dealer network carry Y-DT. Worth searching for Yamaha e-bike service partners in your region or neighbouring country.

Remote/postal service - some Eastern European Giant dealers will accept shipped motors/controllers for programming. Long shot, but worth asking. • Contact Giant Europe directly (giant-bicycles.com) - explain you're in a country without dealers. They occasionally arrange support through their distributor network.

The core issue is unfortunately a proprietary tool problem, not a defective motor. You've done the diagnostic work correctly - the motor is almost certainly fine, just unregistered.
