Hello,
Today I was doing some routine maintenance on my Rail 9.7 and discovered the lower IS headset cup appears to be damaged?

My headset felt smooth and I regularly checked it for play, so this was nothing that I felt. Of course, I am reaching out to my LBS for assessment, but would be interested in hearing if anyone else has experienced this type of damage - or is this normal?

Is it carbon? To me it looks like I'm looking ar the internal wall of a carbon head tube. If so, if there is no slop, that is standard. It's just the internal layup.

A bearing race for integrated headset looking like that would have me concerned. I would contact Trek.
