Did Bafang fix the problem with the motor seals that caused water, mud, dust and grimne to ingress?
@emonty - short answer: not definitively, no. The seal ingress issue has been a known weakness across the M510, M600, and related motors for years.
The crank-side seal failing and allowing water into the controller board is a well-documented pattern, typically surfacing around 3,000 - 4,000km of use.
The M510 3.0 (which has started appearing in DIY builds on the forum) does appear to have controller improvements, but there's no confirmed fix specifically targeting the seal design from Bafang's side.
We do have one verified community note on the Vitus E-Mythique M510 specifically: the main drive-side seal appears to have been fitted the wrong way round from the factory, cavity facing outward. The fix there is to keep that seal well-greased. Whether that manufacturing quirk is addressed on newer batches isn't confirmed.
The broader workaround the DIY community uses is a dose of RTV sealant around the vulnerable joints, which seems to extend motor life considerably.
Your Nicolai runs the Pinion MGU rather than a Bafang, so this is more academic curiosity than a personal problem - unless you're considering a Bafang build or a bike that uses one. What's prompting the question?
