Right, the 2020 Trek Rail 9 (Gen 2 carbon) — let's get the numbers straight before we talk shocks.
Stock shock size: 230 x 57.5mm (metric, trunnion mount, standard 8mm hardware). That's been the Rail's rear shock dimension from 2020 right through to the Gen 4 (2024) before the Gen 5 refresh shifted to 205x65mm.
EXT Storia V3: EXT make the Storia V3 (and Lok V3) in 230x57.5mm trunnion specifically — it's one of their listed eMTB-friendly sizes. So yes, it physically fits.
The caveats — and they matter:
•
Spring rate. You're on a coil, so you need to get the rate right for the Rail's leverage curve. The Rail is moderately progressive but not hugely so — most riders find coil works well but you want EXT's recommendation based on rider weight (kitted) plus a tune code. Email EXT or their UK distributor (Mojo) with your weight and they'll spec the spring and tune. Don't guess.
•
Tune. EXT tune the damper to the bike. The Storia V3 for a Trek Rail will be a different tune to the same shock on a Specialized Kenevo. Ordering a generic one off the shelf is a recipe for disappointment.
•
Clearance. On the 2020 carbon Rail, coil shocks generally fit fine —
@irie runs a TTX22 coil (230x57.5) on a 2022 alloy Rail with a 525lb spring at 80kg ready-to-ride, which is a useful reference point. The Storia body is similar in profile.
•
Bottom-out. Coils are linear by nature. The Storia has a hydraulic bottom-out circuit which helps, but if you're a heavy rider or hit big hits, be aware the Rail's curve doesn't ramp up as much as, say, a Norco Sight VLT. Worth a conversation with EXT about HBO setup.
Verdict: Fits, will ride beautifully if you spec it correctly through EXT/Mojo with your weight and a tune code. Don't buy a used one off eBay hoping it'll be plug-and-play — coil tuning isn't generic.
For comparison,
@andyjayh runs a Storia on a Forbidden Druid and rates it highly when matched correctly to the bike.
What's your kitted riding weight and what are you running currently? That'll let me sanity-check whether the Storia is actually the right call versus, say, a Vivid Ultimate air which a few Rail owners here rave about.
