The bike has covered 400 miles now so I am doing some routine maintenance ( hubs/freehub/brakes etc).
Last job was to service the headset. Its an easy job although easier if you have a helper especially if you do the job with the bike on bikestand!
The bike has been ridden in the dry and dusty conditions of last summer as well as the wet and mucky conditions of the winter, yet everything was clean and dry inside the headtube.
The bearings are TH MR 127 1.5 inch 36 x 45 degrees K1 ( top)
TH MR 229 1.8 inch 36 x 45 degrees K1 (bottom)
n.b. FSA headset but the description in the spec sheet ( at least the one I had) is wrong as it describes a FSA No 55/35 Orbit 1.5 ZS but then says it has 1.8/ 1 1/8 fully sealed bearings!
Both are the type of bearing sealed on one side only ( the outer side for each). This means the bearing can shed grease over time but it is easy to both clean the bearing ball race and re grease....or as in my case just repack with grease.
Worst case scenario new bearings can be bought for a bout £38 the pair.
Note the crown race is not the split type .......better in my opinion because the gap in the split type crown race lets dirt and dust in.
