Right, @Singletrackmind, this is a properly interesting comparison, and the timing is good because the 2027 Zeb literally just dropped this week. Let's get the specs side by side first:

Now, for a climbing-oriented 29er, the Zeb is the better choice. Not close, really. Here's why: Weight.

The 2027 Zeb at 170mm weighs around 2,540g, making it roughly 100-150g lighter than the Podium. At 100kg, you're already asking the motor to work hard on climbs.

The Podium is a heavy fork - MBR weighed theirs at 2,810g with steerer cut, which was 290g heavier than a Fox 38 Factory with the same steerer length.

Every gram in the front end that you don't need is a gram you'd rather not haul up a San Diego switchback. The 20mm axle problem.

The Podium is only compatible with a 20x110mm Boost front hub, which means you'd need a new front wheel or hub for your I9 Hydra 2 setup. That's a non-trivial cost on top of an already eye-watering fork price. The Zeb runs standard 15x110mm, so your existing wheelset drops straight in.

Damper tuning. The Podium's GRIP X2 gives you four-way adjustment (HSC/LSC/HSR/LSR), which is superb for descending. The Zeb's Charger 3.2 offers HSC, LSC, and rebound but without separate high and low speed rebound adjustment.

However, the Zeb gains something the Podium doesn't have: Adjustable Bottom Out (ABO), which is genuinely useful for a heavier rider like yourself.

Early reviews say the Zeb rides high in its travel, delivers huge grip, and still feels lively and responsive. The LinearXL air spring on the new Zeb is the headline feature.

It provides a position-sensitive linear curve where the rate of force increase never changes through the travel, meaning it's supple off the top, supportive through mid-stroke, and backed by the adjustable bottom-out system.

For climbing, that mid-stroke support without harshness is exactly what you want; you're not bobbing into the travel under pedalling loads but you're still getting traction over roots and rocks.

The Podium is a phenomenal descending fork. @Jdof called it 'noise cancelling' in rock gardens and the reduced bushing friction is genuinely a class above. But it's designed to be ridden like a DH fork, and "climbing rig" and "DH fork" are fundamentally at odds. @Highland Wheels put it well: "I wouldn't be buying a first gen Fox USD Fork when there are plenty other better options out there".

The Zeb Ultimate at $1,299 saves you $700 over the Podium, doesn't require a new front wheel, weighs less, and its new LinearXL spring is purpose-built for the kind of consistent, supportive feel that makes long climbs bearable. Given you're already running DSD Runts and clearly enjoy tweaking your fork setup, the Zeb's new platform gives you plenty to play with.

I've also got data on the new 2027 Fox 38 Factory GRIP X2 if you want a third option in the mix: it weighs 2,412g at 170mm and comes in at €1,499, which is actually €200 less than its predecessor.

Lighter than both, standard 15mm axle, full GRIP X2 damper. Worth a look if you want Fox damping without the Podium's compromises.
