For those of you who have more than 1 chain, and clean the spare thoroughly between swaps - what do you use?

I let my mate use my Stumpy yesterday, and after a wash, I noticed the whole drivetrain is covered in some sort of gunk. It feels like treacle, and it doesn’t just wipe off.

I’ve taken the front chainring off and cleaned that, and the jockey wheels. Easy enough.
The cassette and chain are a different story, as I can’t just spray some degreaser on a cloth and wipe them.

I’ve got the cassette and chain in a basin, and have sprayed them with various degreasers, and brushed them - but the sticky stuff is pretty stubborn.

Any suggestions on what to soak them in that’ll take this stuff off? I’m tempted to try them in the ultrasonic bath at work... although I’m not sure if they workshop will be too pleased as it’ll probably end up filthy with this stuff!!
