Hi all
I’m a newbie but got a question.
I’m at a stage where I have just fitted a new shimano chain to my 12 speed. It’s noisy in the lower gears. Sounds nasty.
I have changed it back to the old chain and it’s fine.
I measured the wear at 0.65 and it’s the second new chain which is the trek o one for this bike.
I’m guessing it’s the cassette that’s now worn so I’m thinking shall I change it to a 10 speed cassette. I can get the M6100 which is the same tooth range 10-51t as original.
Will this work and what else will I have to change apart from the chain.
I’m guessing I will have to set the derailleur with new stops etc.
is it better to just get a new 12spd cassette.
I don’t need all the gears but I do use the extremes at times ie 10 and 51.
Bloke at a shop told me mine is a micro spline.
It’s a 2020 trek powerfly 12 speed.
Shimano cassette M7100.
Any thoughts out there.
Cheers lampy

I’m also thinking of going from 12 to 10 in the future on my Cube but it’s the indexing that will be the problem.
Think you are going to need new shifters with 10 clicks over the same cassette width which on mine raises another problem as the shifters are part of the break leavers.

11 speed xt linkglide is the ducks nuts for e bike drive trains. It's robust, cost effective and works well.

Ps shifters aren't a problem. Just buy the right configuration unbolt the old and bolt up the new.

Keep riding the old chain/cassette until i skips.. you might get another 1000km out of it.

Shimano Microspline is just for 12 speed, 10 speed will require an hyperglide freehub, 10/11 speed derailleur and 10 speed shifter

I’m hoping to kee riding on the old setup until gather the stuff for a new drivetrain. May just have to replace the 12 cassette as it seems to work well main reason for change to improve things and maybe bit more robust.
Now I’ve mastered chain changing I guess I may just have to change chain more regularly. I was hoping the chains might last longer on less gears as more room for more robust chain.

After a couple of years with the shimano 12s on my focus thron and multiple chains and trashed deraliers . I made the jump to a microshift adventx 10s drivetrain which has all the gear range i need (11 -48t) , the shifting seems to stay in alignment longer and replacement parts are cheaper . I also understand that the shimano linkglyde 10s and 11s would be suitable, but were not available when i set my system up . For me More gears are definitely not better particularly with ebikes i found i would often be doing multiple click gear changes when riding .

Twelve gears cassetes do not add any easier gear, they only add the 10 tooth cog which increases top speed, all other bigger sized cogs can be found on 10 or 11 speed gears. I also prefer the di2 11s .

I changed the GX setup to a 10 speed Zee on my Rail and it's so much better. The new derailleur is nice and tucked up out the way

I will change the front sprocket to one with fewer teeth in the future as i've lost the really low gearing, but I'm still able to climb anything I can throw at it...

I have an older eBike with 10 speed and a second newer eBike with 12 gears. There's not a lot in it as I upgraded the old bike to 11t to 47t cassette. The new one is 10t to 51t, I certaintly would not change a 12 speed to a 10. No point.

If there is a noise problem then the system is not set up correctly or a bad bike design. Trek are good though - so it must be the set up.

Make sure you have the chain on the right way round. Writing on the outside.
Try adjusting the derailleur B screw in various settings, and see if that resolves the issue.
Use the cable barrel adjusters to finely tune the chain's indexing on the lower gears with the problem.
If you haven't buy a bike work stand. Best bit of kit I bought.

Cheers,
Paul

I agree, no point at all, not one...

Cost of parts, alone, is a very good point on moving away from 12s gears, specially for ebikes, because they chew on drive trains like peanuts.
