Always there and a roll of electrical tape . Remember a lad lost a pedal. Cable tie saved a long walk. Probably some amazing emergency repairs done we will never here about.
 
I've used a handy stone and knocked the link open to release the derailleur after ripping off a hanger.
Just make a U from the chain with the link at the end, support one side of the link on something handy and knock the other side of the link with the stone.

I attach this to my seatpost with the bracket from a Burley trailer. I've never found myself without the right tool or part out on the trail.

It has chain breaker and spare joiners it’s a great tool
The chain breaker is lousy in my experience. Couldn’t break my chain on the trail with this, but luckily had my ancient Topeak Alien which did the job smoothly.
