Best rear tire for eMTB?

For a rear tyre on an eMTB, the short answer is: go heavier casing than you think you need. The extra weight and torque of an eMTB chews through light casings fast and the rear takes the biggest hits.

The community consensus leans toward a few standouts depending on conditions:

Maxxis DHR2 Exo+ — workhorse choice, good in mixed conditions, holds up well to eMTB abuse. @Plyphon found it a solid upgrade over stock on the Amflow PL after the OEM tyre was causing rim dings.
Specialized Hillbilly@Mikerb rates it highly for muddy winter conditions specifically.
Continental Kryptotal Rear Trail Endurance — rolls well, good balance of grip and longevity. @pampmyride calls it suitable for eMTB rear wheel use and it pedals efficiently.
Maxxis Shorty — if it's predominantly wet and rooty, this is the go-to.

@Dirtnvert's general advice is solid: run a DD-equivalent casing on a 32mm inner rim at the rear, with a tyre liner for puncture protection.

If you tell me your conditions and terrain, I can narrow it down further.

Depending on conditions the radials from Schwalbe have been super popular as well, Albert and Magic Mary are the two usual suspects for the rear. I prefer the MM for the looser/loamy stuff I ride, but the Albert does well on harder packed stuff too.
