Asking for a friend...
loved my spectral on BUT there was a battery recall, and we were told not to ride them for 8-9 months. One motor has been replaced, and 3 wiring harnesses, and one battery as of last week.

I get a lot of error codes, that are meaningless, and the cables rattle because of poor design, and the plastic spacers for stem always make noise from poor design.

Long term ownership is pathetic, motor is failing after 7000 miles. But It is a fun bike when its working right, in a year I scored almost 40 KOMs and almost 80 top ten trophies on strava.

Now with gen 5 Bosh motors and Amflow and gen 4 Spec all having stronger motors, this bike is no longer competitive. And reliability has been terrible.

Buying an ebike from Canyon after all their episodes with battery problems on Spectrals and battery connection issues on Strive:On? Leaving thousands of their customers without rideable bikes for near a year. Must have a special kind of masochist fetish...

Before the battery problem, I had no issues with my Spectral-ON CF8. A great handling bike with a better frame finish than my Specialized StumpJumper Evo Pro.

I would happily buy another Canyon bike.

The battery problem is unfortunate. However I personally believe that Canyon have been very fair with a one off compensation payment and a monthly payment whilst owners are without a battery.

But, they have a stack of current Spectral’s that they cannot sell and I don’t think there will be a mad rush to buy them as the Shimano motor, good as it is, has fallen behind the other manufacturers in power, noise (the bloody rattle) and usability.

So Canyon must be working on a replacement for the current full power Spectral-ON and Shimano must also be working on a replacement for the EP801.

I’m just wondering if there are any rumours out there….

Shimano is tight lipped and conservative, So they may not play the catch up game.

They took the lead with a 900w battery and ep801 and it sold a lot of bikes. But it was a failure not just on batteries. Reliability and error codes are common for EP8 series

But that's the point, it's not just SpectralOn that has issues, it's their other bikes as well. At a time I was quite serious about getting a StriveOn, it checked most of my marks, rewards were glowing (even from Rob)... Luckily I waited for a couple months and soon enough the corresponding Facebook group was full of people having issues with batteries disconnecting mid ride. It took Canyon close to a year to acknowledge the problem and promise a new battery latch, then months again to distribute them to people etc etc... I can't imagine purchasing a bike then losing a season or two because of Canyon's shenanigans. Which is a reality for THOUSANDS of their customers.

It's great that you are happy with your Spectral (when it works), I have a couple buddies that swear by their Canyons. But looking at their history, including defects and warranty complications with their analogue bikes (shapeshifters on Strives, chainstays on alu Spectrals, ...), it's not a company I would recommend to anyone. You do you though ✌️

My ownership experience with Canyon was woeful. The measure of a company is not how slickly they market the product, how they mobilise their army of influencers….. it’s what happens when things go wrong….. Canyons response is always about protecting the brand and the balance sheet they have insufficient focus on the customer.

Strive ON ? What the issue on that. 😂😂. I turned my strive ON back at canyon after 16 months fight. 👎. They refunded all my money for the bike. They not even give me and explained why it is crap or and sorry for all your troubles in 16 months 🙈

Interesting, my EP801 doesn’t rattle at all and neither does my friends. It’s been a solid motor and since the software update I haven’t had any issues with wanting more power.

we sold 7-8 of these to our friends, and same here. most will shut down while riding if they have over 700 miles. But none rattle

Same thing, I have ep801 and it doesn’t rattle. Enough power and dynamic trail mode is gem.

I will say that I do not ride in the rain or really wet conditions either. I also do not power wash my bikes and try to dry clean them as much as possible. My other bike has a Brose S Mag motor with tons of miles on it and have never had an issue with it ether. Maybe it’s luck?

Does your bike use a Rosenberger connection to battery?

not luck on our Canyons we have guys that dont wash their bikes and it still shut off
Yes it has a Rosenberger connector, I do use electrical contact cleaner regularly.

My experience with Canyon is that they don't stock replacement battery chargers for my two year old CF-7!

I'm trying to communicate with them currently about my battery charger failing when I first plugged it in to the warranty battery for my SpectralON when i first got it. After having them tell me in August that they had no chargers (???), but they'd try to get one from Germany (???), I got this autoreply when I emailed the rep again:

"

I responded to the agent again and got the same message. THE FAQ link is dead and the contact link asks me for all the information I already gave the rep. GUes I'll call them, but in the past when I did, whoever I'd get would say that a tech guy would get back to me. BY EMAIL.

ANYBODY know of an aftermarket charger in the US market that will work?

Generally happy with the bike (other than not being able to ride it for almost a year).
