Can someone advise what rear wheel to buy for my rail 5? I think this is the wheel I need but don't fancy waiting a year for it:

I'm struggling to find wheels that wide so if anyone could send me a link or what wheel to but that's actually available it would be great. Thanks.

The Hope would be my choice.

Alternatively, get someone like Handbuilt MTB and Road Wheels. Carbon and Alloy | Scrubwheels.com to build you a decent wheel.
 
Try Hunt Wheels. I have V2 Trail Wide wheels which people say are shit but for what you pay the latest versions are OK. They now do stronger e-mtb wheels.

My bike is 2022 Trek Rail (L) and I confirm that you need 29", Boost, Shimano Microspline.

I have Hunt Trail Wide wheels on my Rail which are currently £339 per pair.
 
Personally, I'd get a wheel custom built; Hope hub with a DT Swiss EX511 rim.

You could just buy a rim and get it rebuilt onto your hub if you want to save some money.
I'm using Stans Flows, they also do a 50% off crash replacement if you do the same again!

Replacing the rim was my first choice, then I was told it's more cost effective to buy a new wheel, then Je James couldn't get me wheel and Trek told me they can't either AND won't be getting any replacement wheels in the future. I never knew it was such a pain to replace a wheel. lol.

However, it is looking like replacing the rim is the better option. How about this one? It's available for next day delivery you see.

Just work out how much it's going to cost to build up. I think those EX511's are pretty decent rims.

Rim - £100
Spokes - £32-40?
LBS Build - £40-60?

I was thinking about reusing most of these spokes. What do you think? I can take them out myself and rebuild onto the new rim, then take it for truing up. I'd replace the bent ones of course.

EX511 is a very good rim; strong but not too heavy. Can your LBS get it built in time for the weekend though? Have you asked them what rims they have in stock? My LBS keeps a good range including EX511.

I wouldn't. They may not be the right length anyway.

30mm internal is fine for a 2.5 Minion.

I'm new to all this and presumed that when I bought a 5 grand bike I'd be able to go back tot he shop I bought it from for things such as wheels...but Je James and Trek simply could not help. When I looked into all this myself I was quite surprised at all the options available just for a rear wheel, so I've learned a lot from this thread. Thanks again. Here's what I bought. Cheaper than Chain Reaction who just told me the following: "It is a common misunderstanding, although both CRC and Wiggle are owned by the same parent company, we are two distinctly different retailers." So I bought it from Wiggle as I'm a member and get free next day delivery.

When you swap the cassette onto the new wheel, be careful that you (a) get the spacer in the right position and (b) get the smaller sprockets correctly aligned. If in doubt the LBS will do it for you in 15 mins max. Good luck.

He should not have a spacer it should be direct fit if he is running a shimano spline drive on hope hubs just so he isnt looking for one .

Also for the OP i run a 2.8 on a fortus 30 rim its a good fit .
The 30 Rim is the most reinforced as well out of the fortus rims as theres extra bracing internally
It will make a great back wheel ive been hammering mine for years and its never needed any love not even a spoke tighten .

When the cassette is removed from the damaged wheel it will come apart in several pieces.

What i was meaning and i thought you meant was the extra spacer you get with hope hubs when there new as you only mentioned one , not whats already fitted to the cassette
But thinking about it he should not get one with a micro spline only a HG hub

Of course thou he just swaps everything like for like thats a given .

I've had to send my rear wheel back to Trek on warranty. I hope they have got one to send me. I've had issues with bearings coming loose and a lot of play in the wheel. Been looking at upgrading to fortus 35.
