Sadly this used to be quite common and has now been addressed by Bosch with a new type of sticker. This is exactly what it looks like... a hole directly into your motor! You do need to contact Bosch because this motor will fail prematurely if any water at all has made it's way inside.
Because these are bushes and not bearings, you will feel a slight bit if play, even on a new Gen 4 motor. This is usually around 2mm by the time it gets to the very end of the pedal arm.
The picture below shows how the dirt gets into the motor and you can see the plastic bushes shown on our...
My best tip would be to leave it alone! The Bosch Gen 4 is a very difficult motor to repair. Be very carful of the crankshaft, if you pull it or lift it before removing the torque sensor screw or armature and transfer gears, you will break the torque sensor. You will also struggle to remove and...
If both motors are "smart" system, they can be swapped but then the bike would have to be connected to Bosch software to let the controller know it now has a new motor and to talk to it. I am not sure whether you will have a problem at this point, if the Bosch software recognises that your bike...
Some motors yes, some no. To be honest, most new motors of any make, the PCB is wrapped around the motor to fit it all in and this means it goes from top to bottom. This is just another consequence of everyone wanting smaller motors.
Please think carefully before putting a different grease in or on your motor.
Many greases might look good for electric motors, but an ebike motor is not technically an electric motor! It has an electric motor inside it, but the thing itself is mostly gears and electronics. This is when a much...
Good job, and 10 x cheaper than our Snap-On ones  Can't help but mention, I was always taught that aluminium embodied into a grinding wheel is extremely dangerous because it expands faster than the wheel and can also overheat the wheel causing it to shatter! Maybe worth getting a dressing...
Bosch Gen 3 does not have seals, only a plastic cover on the drive side was fitted to the later ones. Pic below
If you are riding off road in wet or muddy conditions, I would strongly recommend removing the "seals" cleaning and re-greasing every 2 to 3 months. Remember, these are not seals...
Thanks for the shout out for Cycle Chrome, those guys have put a lot of effort into learning about eBike motors, including flying over to the UK to spend a few days training with us. As for your water ingress, I think what you perceive to be water is oil. This is a very light clear oil that...
Peter here from the eBike Motor Centre, please note as stated on our site, our high success rate is with the Bosch Gen 2, a very different animal to the Gen 4.
Mechanically, these motors are quite difficult to get apart without braking something, and even more difficult to put back together...
Well done for persevering! It's very unusual to have any gaps between the motor and frame, but your solution seems to have done the trick! As for gasket, there is a "damping film" (gasket) fitted to some early Bosch motors (Gen 2) but this was next to useless! Once fitted, it compressed and as...
Normal Bosch Gen 4 mounting brackets have smaller holes for the screws that secure the bracket to the motor. Other than that the brackets are identical. Fitting the "smart" brackets to the earlier Gen 4 would make mounting the motor a bit more difficult. And would also be difficult to stop the...
There are 4 brackets, one short left, one short right, one long left and one long left. But as I said, there is no part number for the Gen 4, only the Gen 4 "Smart" I do not know if these parts are the same so I can't tell you whether they are suitable? I will try to find out for you.
Bosch only offer the brackets for the new BDU3 "Smart System" Gen 4 motor. Although, I'm not yet sure what the difference is, if any! If you're in the UK, just drop me an email. We have loads if you need one.
This can be due to a few things on the Gen 2. If any extra sealing options have been fitted, these will add friction. Earlier Bosch motors main motor bearings ran with less friction than the latest ones with better sealing. The main motor bearing shield was updated to incorporate a rubber lip...
OK, I am going to say that this is definitely not coming from your motors frame brackets. If it starts making a noise when you take 380% of the power away, something else is going on!
If you do check the chainring to spider bolts, they won't usually be loose, they just won't be tight enough and...
