Guided ride - Sherwood Pines, NCB area, & Vicar Water. Sun 28th Jun'26

Yep, Sunday is usually the best day for @johnc and me. John and I were out today doing some more trail clearance, the usuul brambles and bracken, but a load of nettles this time too. That bit of the trail that I abandoned on the ride, has now been cleared. But I can't guarantee that any of the...

    Body armour. Again!

@JoeBlow I have never worn as much armour as you, but I used to keep getting rib injuries when I fell off. Then I worked out it was the beefy elbow guard that was doing the damage! I changed to a slimmer elbow guard. No more rib injuries. Something to consider at least.

Guided ride - Sherwood Pines, NCB area, & Vicar Water. Sun 28th Jun'26

Yes thanks! The freehub/cassette problem is still being debated by e13 and Sram. That happened on a Tuesday. I spent Wed looking for an alterbatuve wheel. But the LBS, Sherwood Pines Cycles, decided that the deabate could take a while, so they provided me with spare wheel free for the...

Guided ride - Sherwood Pines, NCB area, & Vicar Water. Sun 28th Jun'26

Thanks for that @kefconstruction . That was good to hear. :) I always appreciate feedback, even if it's unfavourable during the ride. I can do something about it then, rather than only finding out after the ride. Your buddies were pleasant enough but I found them hard to read. I didn't want to...

Chain skipping under load after bike service

Take a look at the pics that the OP posted at the beginning. That is not a new chain.

    What’s this part for??

Don't saw it, it will remove material and it wont fit back on! Instead, split it with a sharp knife and maybe a hammer. Then when you glue it back together (AFTER you have put it in place), it will fit ok.

Chain skipping under load after bike service

I'm sure it does work fine in that position, that is not its function. It is a friction clutch to stop the chain whipping up and down and causing the lower mech arm to move back and forth. By restricting the back and forth movement, the chain whip is reduced.

    Chain stretch dilema.

It was during the Summer of 1976 in the the UK. It was the record breaking heatwave, so it definitely was not cool! I was part way through a four-year sandwich course in mechanical engineering (three years of six months at University, followed by six months in industry, then one last year all at...

    Loose spokes

I don't posess any of those either, which is why I get Jack at Newark Cycles in Newark to do all that stuff for me.

    Chain stretch dilema.

That is a treally great find! It sounds right. @irie I agree with your statement "No component comprised of over 100 supposedly identical components will perform with perfect homogeneity." However, I was not assuming that all the sideplates are identical to each other, nor the inner plates...

    Chain stretch dilema.

@TheKaiser At last it was not a figment of my imagination! Somebody else agrees with me that chain can wear diferentially olong its length! "....Interestingly, according to the ZeroFrictionCycling guy, that is not the best method, because a given chain will not wear totally evenly along it's...

What did you buy your ebike this week?

Both look good, but I made my comment before the 2nd pic arrived. Bearing in mind that I have zero chance with the calendar model, if we were ever to meet, I might as well be picky. She's a bit flat chested for my taste.

    Loose spokes

As a self confessed Sorcer'ers apprentice, Where do you find what the spoke tension should be? Who's website? The bike maker, the wheel maker, the rim maker or the spoke supplier?

    Loose spokes

Adjusting spoke tension is a black art! Whenever I have tried, it always makes things worse. But that's just me. :(

Chain skipping under load after bike service

The little lever is the clutch and it is to reduce the amount that the lower strand of chain whips up and down when riding over rough ground. If you look at photos of biikes going over rough ground (in bike mags for ex.) you can frequently see that the lower strand is in a horizontal "S" shape...
