Night riding setup for eMTB — what lights are you using?

Got to be a bar light and a head light. Putting all the light on your head is too much weight, and if you only have it on the bar you can't see round corners or to lift the bike over a fence etc. But I don't use any bike specific lights. Instead I use normal flashlights. Had too many bad...

Demo ride : Specialized Levo SL.

It's very frustrating that there are so few options for low power SL bikes, all the attention has gone to crazy power numbers and people finding a 22kg bike lighter than a 26kg one and thinking it's incredible without stopping to wonder what dropping another 4kg feels like. Even Specialized seem...

    Don't underestimate the Peak District

So? Only reason there are footpaths there at all is because people trespassed illegally. Peak National Park are never going to grant access through lobbying so the historic precedent of peaceful mass trespass is totally legitimate in my book.

With these E-CVT's kill the rest of the market?

Just to be clear, I don't think the efficiency is going to be that bad. Maybe 10% worse than a typical setup. And with batteries slowly improving it may not be a huge deal even for a lightweight bike. But I don't think that that will even be an option anytime soon.

With these E-CVT's kill the rest of the market?

Proof will definitely be in the pudding, but we can be fairly sure of a few things:- 1. Efficiency will probably be quite a lot lower. Efficiency of an e-CVT is not constant. There is a "sweet spot" where the sun is stationary and efficiency is highest. Losses aren't just in the planetary...

    Don't underestimate the Peak District

I found this video amusing:- Funny how someone can think themselves qualified to pronounce on bikes, experienced riding big alpine routes and come to our little hills and struggle so much. Never broken a derailleur? One day on Win Hill sorts that out. Didn't even look like they rode the...

Orbea Lifetime Warranty - only on paper

I find it frustrating that ASTM paywall their tests. So a bike gets rated Cat5 say and we the consumer are just expected to take that on trust. They make millions of dollars gatekeeping the classifications yet are a "not for profit". Many of the other (EU) bike tests are stupid, fork tests where...

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

It depends on performance. If they are just offering cheap generic stuff equivalent to what is spec'd on lower end bikes then it won't take many sales. But if they are offering auto-adjusting electronic dampers etc that integrate nicely with the drivetrain, sharing power supply and bar controls...

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

I'm reserving judgement until I actually ride one, but it will have to have serious "feel" issues for me not to want one. I am also very glad that there is more than one player entering the market. If it was just a single company I am pretty sure they would set their price very close to that...

Weird Reversed Stem Geo / Chat

I think that will definitely be contributing, have you measured it at that or just worked it out from the original spec? I think Geometron will be pretty good but there is always a tolerance on the headangle and tyre size, shock length, etc etc can start to add up, so I would always advocate...

Weird Reversed Stem Geo / Chat

Maybe the photo? But your head angle looks to be incredibly slack, like 50 degrees or something. Almost certainly going to skew things compared to mid 60's head angles..

Levo SL Gen 1 Levo/Levo SL (gen1) TCU Dead/Unresponsive Solution Warning Tip

Don't think that link worked. It was:- " hsthe E-bike Speed Meter Extension Cable 5 Pin Waterproof SM Cable for Display Electric Bicycle-170cm " on Amazon UK.

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

I think people need to be prepared for the possibility that the ecvt drives have a different feel to conventional derailleurs. The connection between the pedals and the wheel is likely to feel a little spongy. If you just want to power up fire-roads then mostly freewheel downhills then this is...

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

I don't have an issue with the GoBao hanging down like that as long as it isn't too far below the chainring. It would actually be really nice if motors incorporated mounts for a skid/bash plate. As a bike designer, it is always frustrating to be chasing grams everywhere and then have to factor...

Levo SL Gen 1 Levo/Levo SL (gen1) TCU Dead/Unresponsive Solution Warning Tip

I replaced the run of cable that goes from the motor to the display. My theory is that there is only one length of cable harness, and on smaller frames, this results in a lot of kinks in the spare cable that break. Maybe the original cable is also a bit crap? So I bought this ( ) I cut the...

Chainsaw and bag for clearing trails?

Since I last posted in this thread I did end up buying an Electric chainsaw, a little Makita. It's really good but do have to constantly remind myself how dangerous it has the potential to be. Very easy to see how one could become complacent and so many ways it could go wrong.

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

Thanks for linking to that article. Very interesting and it deserves reading. My concern with the Freegen brake layout is that you are limited just to regen braking force/torque, which probably isn't enough for real MTB riding. I am also surprised that he dismisses a mid motor arrangements...

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

Damn I'm old, I can remember the exact same type of comment about indexed gears... "no-one needs that, you need to be able to fine-tune it, just plan your shifts ahead on your fully rigid, rim braked, 15 speed, steel anchor"

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

It's going to be a long journey definitely. It will be less efficient, you can almost guarantee that, and probably enough to be noticeable. BUT, I really fancy the "auto" "shifting" without steps. Just being able to forget about the right thumb and ride at a fairly constant cadence up and down...

    Avinox Reveals its Motor Gearbox

Pretty much, you can use one of the motors as a generator to power the gearing but it's likely to feel super draggy in all but the native gear (where the sun is stationary), and even then pretty bad. BUT assistance could be set to taper off as the battery gets low to mitigate this.
