That could be a solution for a bike that is 5 or more years old and has had a hard life but we are talking about this failure on new or nearly new bikes and there is no way would a DIY solution such as you propose could be acceptable and indeed might well void the warranty (for what it's worth)...

I have a 300 mm facing toward the mount and it is 300 mm of cable excluding the cable sleeves coming out of the plugs, so about 350mm plug centre to plug centre. I also have a 150mm facing away from the mount (for 2 different bikes) and again the length is cable only. Hope that helps.
