Since I last posted in this thread I did end up buying an Electric chainsaw, a little Makita. It's really good but do have to constantly remind myself how dangerous it has the potential to be. Very easy to see how one could become complacent and so many ways it could go wrong.
Thanks for linking to that article. Very interesting and it deserves reading. My concern with the Freegen brake layout is that you are limited just to regen braking force/torque, which probably isn't enough for real MTB riding. I am also surprised that he dismisses a mid motor arrangements...
Damn I'm old, I can remember the exact same type of comment about indexed gears... "no-one needs that, you need to be able to fine-tune it, just plan your shifts ahead on your fully rigid, rim braked, 15 speed, steel anchor"
It's going to be a long journey definitely. It will be less efficient, you can almost guarantee that, and probably enough to be noticeable. BUT, I really fancy the "auto" "shifting" without steps. Just being able to forget about the right thumb and ride at a fairly constant cadence up and down...
Pretty much, you can use one of the motors as a generator to power the gearing but it's likely to feel super draggy in all but the native gear (where the sun is stationary), and even then pretty bad. BUT assistance could be set to taper off as the battery gets low to mitigate this.
Been meaning to do the sums on eCVT's for a while now and this was the spur I needed. Having a wide gear range really knocks the efficiency. Assuming they use latest tech in the electronics (which I think is likely for them) then it looks like 85% might be ball-park average, but it is much...
Lots of people have been anticipating something like this and SRAM and Shimano etc must have had an idea it was coming (as well as Bosch and TQ and Specialized and Mahle etc) so they probably have something in the works that needs expediting now. SRAM was already working on motors and then they...
Maybe they knew Gobao was showing their's? Can you imagine what the show coverage would be like if Gobao was the only player? The Gobao does appear to be ready to go.
Interestingly, Bosch do the ECU's and software that controls several automotive e-CVTs so they may be better able to rise to this challenge than it seems...
To be fair, auto-shifting with conventional stepped gears would probably drive most people mad with shifts when you don't want them killing flow. But stepless shouldn't suffer from this IF they can get the software right..
Yes. Be nice if there was a way to set this up with a small battery and something like Specialized auto-tune so you could still ride with minimal assist in a natural way.
Super interested in this. Trying to work out what wasn't said as much as what was.
Does sound like it's an eCVT, 2 motors and a planetary system to control output speed. If the battery is dead flat then yes I think it is all but dead. I think in theory you can still pedal and take some of your...
Nice.
I couldn't find older Specialized models (my mistake maybe?) so couldn't put my existing bike in to compare which would be ideal.
Also be good if you could jump from the geometry compare chart to the full comparison version without having to re-select the bikes.
Interesting thread. It's a shame that the motor companies are so reluctant to supply parts to enthusiasts (or even small builders). My first choice would be the Bosch SX (assuming you want to keep the weight down), any of the Bosch batteries should be compatible so that gives you a lot of...
I would, but push bikes do have ISCG mounts and a range of little bash guards to fit them.
On my Levo SL I have a bashring on the crank and have covered the factory bashguard with carbon/kevlar (because the stock guards only last about a month on their own.
Thanks, that's worth knowing, but essentially:- "just interested in riding with scenary and sleep" about covers it, some nice food would be good though.
If someone has a motor with a rattle, it's not too fantastical to imagine that they might google the issue and find this thread. Unfortunately it's just full of pointless bickering rather than anything solid that might help them.
The other possibility (that you seem to favour) is that competing...
Can't believe people struggle-on buying more and more Shimano derailleurs. I went through this years ago, finally realised that the parallelogram links are super weak and bend, which makes the cage point in towards the spokes and then catch and destroy everything. Switched to SRAM and found a...
