Wow!

I didn’t expected that but I really like the ideea of upgrading electrical system rather than the whole bike.

Chinese did it again with Gobao P100/P120 line of mid drive motors. They have the same form factor/mounting points as Shimano. There are many capable eMTBs out there with Shimano system that could get an upgrade of E-tech onto existing frames.


What do you guys think about this?

Sadly but understandably, one has to swap out the complete Shimano e-system for the GoBao conversion kit, if one should want to swap one part of it. Motor, electronics, battery, display – together or none. They plan to bring different battery form factors as well, but I don't see them giving us Canyon 900Wh ones for now. I also doubt that this would be economically sustainable at all. Have you found prices anywhere? I would prefer to have my EP8 repaired, if necessary. Will the GoBao X1P come with a conversion kit as well? That would be some kind of more radical upgrade, that could really revive the used bike emtb market!

This is interesting, as it demonstrates Gabao is willing to integrated into other platforms. What I would really like to see is Gabao adapting their motor or even their ECVT motor into other legacy form factors. Namely Bosch Gen4 and Gen5. I could see a lot more take-up than for Shimano systems out there.

Interesting, do I assume that Gabao is saying that a manufacturer with a current mold that does not support the "new new" generation of drivetrains, can bring relevence to a previously legacy design.
 
I liked this idea a while back, but the cost of a new shimano motor is now so cheap, I don't think id bother
 
if the batteries fit, and based upon the cost of the kit, i'm really curious to see some VPP santa cruz Bullit modded from Shimano to Gobao kit.

And if Santa has more than enough old bullit and heckler VPP in stock, they could retrofit the gobao kits in the frames, rename the 2022-2024 models in "2027 models" and boom : mega sale.

I have to confess that if it was possible, i'd try this on the old Ibis Oso. Sadly, it's a bosch ...

I have only one doubt : at the rear wheel, it's a single magnet or a 'hall effect' sensor ?
 
Now this could be interesting, be nice to upgrade my Rise when the motor dies.

This is the way forward, upgradeable generic motor mounts.
 
This is exactly what the motor manufacturers need to be doing, all of them. An ebike owner should be able to upgrade a very expensive bike to the latest tech (ecvt motor as an perfect example) at a reasonable cost, thereby extending the life of a bike that should last decades if looked after. What that cost would be remains to be seen but it sure would be cheaper than buy a complete bike.

I have an e8000 with external battery, if they did a battery for that it would be great
 
I would be interested in this if it works as well or better than my EP801, and it isn't cost prohibitive. The only gripe that I have with my current bike is the 630wH Shimano battery doesn't have enough capacity, especially in cold weather.

I'd love to have an 800+wH with the same form factor as the 630 Shimano battery.
 
This will be fantastic to prolong the life of our EP801 bikes, which are absolutely fine in every other regard (frame, suspension, brakes, gears... ). I'll start looking for reports of people having done the switch, if this works well enough, shimano might have another problem besides being out engineered by all the new contenders...

Seems like the first company to offer the retrofit kit is Alutech from Germany : Full Kit

Not cheap since it replaces everything from shimano.

And so far it seems only compatible with shimano internally mounted batteries like the 630wh or 504wh.

It also replaces the 630 setup for a 600wh battery but they claim more ride time since the the Gobao motor should be more efficient.

Its getting closer and closer , very cool.

Wow, you have a good eye, I had no idea Alutech was selling the kit like this! Having said that, it is pretty pricy, and they only offer support for people with Alutech frames, so I am unsure how much value they are offering along with their additional layer of profit. It would be interesting to see what Gobao direct, or a dedicated reseller, can offer as a price, in order to make it a more viable conversion.

There are a lot of nice Shimano motored bikes out there, so I really hope that someone sees the potential opportunity and offers a really compelling upgrade package to keep owners happily rolling for many more miles. Between this Gobao and the Intradrive MGU, I am keeping my fingers crossed that one of them will offer something that is truly an enhancement of the bike's original capabilities. Last time I had checked, Gobao still had a clutch rattle in the motor, which might not be a problem for people accustomed to a rattle in their Shimano motor, but it would be nice if they could quiet that down, to truly equal the premier models from Bosch and Avinox. It seems like it should be achievable within their current packaging, thus keeping the Shimano compatibility.
 
Yeah , they do offer the basic instructions if you have another brand of bike but of course they won't help you with details like battery locking system, charge port etc.

That said I wonder if other brand will follow , like say Santa Cruz, offering an upgrade kit for older bike. I doubt it, but the other way forward would be either a distributor of a general use kit for a slightly lower cost (could be Gobao directly) or someone willing to R&D and develop kits on a demand basis.

In the end, I think that kit will be more for the diyer and someone with some basic to advanced knowledge of ebike design and maintenance.

Personnally I could easily design the parts needed and machine them on a CNC at work. But thats not the reality of everyone.
 
Too expensive for what you get, and if you have electronic shifting, you cannot use it, unless you go back to manual.

As much as id like more power and a better drive unit, dont want to give up the electronic shifting after the price they charge
