Can I run a Bosch Smart System CX motor (16.2) on a 16.19 bike WITHOUT updating?

Hi,

I’m looking for some advice before buying a replacement Bosch Smart System motor.

Bike:

  • Trek Rail 9.8 GX 2022
  • Bosch Smart System (Kiox)
  • Currently running firmware 16.19.0 across the system

Motor I’m considering:

  • Bosch Performance Line CX (BDU374Y)
  • Seller says it comes with firmware 16.2

Important:I do NOT want to update anything. My goal is to install the motor and keep it running on 16.2 without updating the system further.

Questions:

  1. Will a 16.2 motor run properly in a system already updated to 16.19.0 without forcing an update?
  2. When the system does the config ID sync, is there any chance it will require or trigger a firmware update?
  3. Has anyone successfully run a mixed setup like this long-term (motor on older firmware, rest of system newer)?
  4. Any risk of errors, limp mode, or needing dealer intervention just from the version mismatch?
  5. Is it realistically possible to avoid updating, or will Bosch eventually force it?

I’d really appreciate real-world experience from anyone who’s done this.

Thanks

I don't really know the exact answer to your questions, but the firmware is on the motors motherboard and the kiox is only reading what the motor tells it.
So by rights any smart motor should work regardless of firmware installed.
Not sure if the battery will be happy, but can't see any reason why not 🤔

This would be a question for Bosch. I suspect it will depend on the difference between the two firmwares and what exactly was updated in 16.2
