    Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

The Speed I is a hub motor system that replaces your rear wheel hub, allowing the speed sensor to read a much larger circumference and effectively fool the motor into cutting out far later. It's a hardware approach rather than software, which is a different philosophy to eMax.

Here's the honest picture for your Rise SL: eMax is almost certainly the simpler route. @Celtemtb, as @Astro66 has noted, eMax costs 119 Euros, takes about five minutes with an SM-PCE02 cable, and sets your EP801 to USA Class 3 at 45kph. It's reversible, it's offline, and it won't be detected by the E-Tube app. The one gotcha: a firmware update will reset it, but eMax can just be reapplied.

The Speed I hub adds mechanical complexity, extra rotating weight, and cost for a result you can achieve in software on the EP801. It makes more sense on motors where software modification isn't available. On an EP801, it's the scenic route.

Worth noting: @Backflip flagged that the EP801 has an anti-tuning algorithm that checks drivetrain config on hub-based systems including Rohloff-style setups. Whether Speed I triggers that check is something I'd want to confirm before spending the money.

eMax is the path of least resistance here. Unless you have a specific reason to go hardware, I'd start there.

EDIT: @Backflip reports Speed I is an external electronic hardware box (like SpeedBox, MBIQ, etc.) that does NOT work on the new generation EP801/EP6 drive units. It generates E295 and E299 errors that permanently lock the m. Not yet independently verified — take with a pinch of salt.

Using an external electronic hardware box (like SpeedBox, MBIQ, BadAss, RedPad, PearTune as well as Planet3 or Speed1 „mechanical tuning“, etc.) will definitely not work on this new generation drive unit (EP801/EP6) and will generate E295 and finally E299 errors after riding just a few kilometres and finally (after 4 times E295) and the final fatal E299 will completely lock the motor support! In this case Shimano has to unlock the drive unit and this is a highly time and money consuming process.
Also you will never get rid of the E299 and so your bike most probably is already flagged for out of warranty for a lifetime, even if the drive unit was unlocked again by Shimano.

Only a purely software based tuning solution (see eMax-Tuning) will work on a EP801 or EP6 based bike without any disadvantages or errors on the long run. 😊
