I have been quite happy with my 2020 Heckler the only frustration I've had is the small battery and my too phat ass that limits the range for my average rides to between 15-18 max miles in these local hills. I want longer rides.
I've done everything i can to reduce weight of the bike (..still workin' on ME..) + I invested nearly $1k alone on a spare battery(!), the bike has been completely upgraded with the best parts available: carbon Enve bar/stem, carbon wheels, cranks, E13 alloy cogset, SRAM X01 Carbon shifter SRAM Code Ultimate brk levers w/carbon levers, a complete TI hardware conversion (not a ferrous metal bolt on it) It now has a br. new 160 Fox 36 vs the 38 in these pics, I plan to keep it, the motor is starting to run a bit louder and it is due for a service after 4+ years (the bike was purchased br. new in early 2020 and sat unused for 19mo 'till I got it mid 2022 with less than 7km on the ODO). It is an awesome bike I've done extended rides with the spoare battery and all day rides at the bike park when I had to use it as a back up after my park bike had a shock failure. I never turned the heckler on and rode the hell outta that mountain for 3 days. I shoulda pulled the battery out but I had no solution to the gaping open hole behind the front wheel that would have been collecting dirt and crap all day...
I've looked into servicing the motor myself replacing bearings etc ( fantastic posts in here on that project.!) but i'm not super interested in that DIY project for once, so I checked out a rebuild service and they say they will open clean and service the motor comprehensively replacing any worn or damaged parts as well as replacing all the bearings with a much improved bearing spec Abec 7 to Abec 20? that also improves motor efficiency, impacting battery life/range notably. THIS is my major pain point and goal, longer battery range.
The motor service/rebuild-bearing upgrade promises to deliver improved range, 15-20% improvement is often realized. The rebuild service with shipping etc. will run about $550+-.
I also just found a brand new EP8 motor available locally (!!) for $550...based on the very detailed ( THANK YOU! ) parts lists ive found here for these e8000-ep8 swaps I could also upgrade the motor entirely it would cost several hundred $ more to do the swap vs the servcice/rebuild- Upgrade.. not including any official shimano service center Firmware updates etc that may be needed to get this thing running after I do the swap.. I'im assuming $150+- for that service if needed to upgrade firmware, set motor angle and rr wheel circumfrence etc....
My general question is what do you guys think is the better option..?
Have any of you had your E8000 motor rebuilt ? what was the result?
I love the Heckler and am willing to invest in it to keep it and have it as a spare/alternate ebike option. I recently purchased a base Orbea wild H30 on sale for a stupid low price as a back up since I expected to have to get the Heckler motor serviced some time this year before I damage anything, and had no idea how long that would take. THe Wilds were on sale for a stupid low price for the Base H30 i was able to completely upgrade it to top level spec and I am LOVING that 625 kwh battery range!!! It's an alloy beast at about 49LB w/ 170mm travel F/R compared to the CC Carbon framed Heckler at about 43LB - 160mmft + just under 160mm rr (Cascade Link increases rr travel from 150 to to 158/159mm)
The $cost difference is not super critical issue, I prefer to spend less but will spend what it takes to achieve the result.
I am not clear on what benefits a new EP8 motor would offer over a freshly rebuilt well running E8000 motor with improved efficiency, improved batt life and a bit more range... im happy with the power, just want longer range.
The motor service was the plan for probably August but now that I found the EP8 motor available locally im very tempted to upgrade this bitch.
What say you.
..?
What am i missing...?
