Hi all! I have a 2022 Giant Reign E+0 that regularly stops charging around 85-92% ish. I think it's an issue with the charger itself as when I unplug the charger from the bike the green LED remains flashing meaning it's 'charging' whereas it should go back to solid red (not charging). If I power cycle the charger & plug it back in again it'll usually then charge to 100%

Has anyone else experienced this and can confirm if a replacement charger fixed it? Or is there any other issues anyone knows about?

Thanks in advance!

Common 'issue'. Battery BMS controls the charge rate and flow. Charging is in 3 cycles, starting with constant current (CC) then constant voltage (CV) then trickle. The switching point is 5-10% of CC mode, so when the voltage rises in the cells, the current reduces. As battery's age, they lose ability.

Your bike is 4 years old and battery attrition is normal. If you think the problem is the charger swap it out with someone else, but I doubt it's the charger. Secondly, Giant updated some firmwares some time ago aka Apple, to try and extend the life of batteries by playing around with some Canbus signalling between BMS and charger.

Option B. Use a different charger with no BMS communication.

Many thanks @offroad, very interesting.
Out of interest I've checked the charge cycles on my battery which is just 17, the bike only has 661 miles on it despite it's age and the battery is showing as 99% healthy too. When connecting to the bike it did inform me there was an update which I have done, maybe that will cure it if Giant have modified some code.

I don't have access to another charger to borrow but I did read these can be charged with any 36v charger if one knows how, so that's definitely something to look into. A new official Giant charger is an eye watering £140.

First, ask your dealer to check if there is an update available for the battery firmware and the bike firmware. Once everything is updated, it should charge correctly.
If the problem continues after that, ask your dealer to replace the cable from the battery to the motor.

Everyone I’ve heard of with this issue has solved it that way.

Thanks, something to look into!

For now I've "solved" (bodged) the issue by using a smart plug which I program to turn off & back on after 4 hours, so far everytime I've come to use the bike it's been 100% charged

check also the charge port on the bike...that cable could be damaged also...but first update everyhting. 👍🏻

Hi, I also have this issue, sometimes it charges to 100%, other times it charges to 82-92%. Have you managed to work out how to fix the problem? I also must add that if I remove the battery from the bike it always charges to 100%. But I am lazy, and I would rather charge the battery whilst it is still on the bike. Cheers

I haven't got to the bottom of it, I simply use a smart plug to power cycle the charger after a few hours which works but is a bodge (or hack lol). I did update the bike's software which made no difference.

That's very useful info, I'll try taking the battery out to charge. If it cures the issue then the problem must lie with the wiring harness of the bike, as also suggested above

The battery has firmware that can be upgraded as well, but not through the app. The dealer can do it. Maybe give them a call.

I had a similar issue if I was charging though the bike, but not with battery removed. affected both my 625 and 800wh batteries. Dealer replaced my charger, been fine since then.

Hi, dunno if you got to the bottom of this but I'd echo the advice to take your battery into your local Giant dealer and ask them to plug it in to the diagnostics. I had a similar issue and it turned out my battery needed a software update (which has to be done by a dealer not via the app). I know it wasn't the charge cable on the bike or my actual charger unit as I have a second battery for my bike and it was charging fine. Mine has been working normally again since the battery software update was installed.
