Hi everyone! Great to be here and start my eMTB journey with you all.

So, a quick intro……..ex sports biker, ex heavyweight bodybuilder. I gave up training about 5 years ago. Went from super fit, training every day since I was 13 years old. To, well, becoming old! No more motorbikes. No more weights.

I suffered near fatal acute heart failure over two years ago and I’m very grateful and happy to have just seen my 55th birthday.

Sometimes becoming old does actually bring some benefits with it and the reason I’m sharing a little bit of my life story with you all is that turning 55, has brought a couple of little perks.

Being able to draw down some of your pension contributions for instance 😉

So, after borrowing a friend’s Spesh Turbo Levo for a couple of months, I took the plunge into getting involved in the world of eMTB’s and have just bought a new 2023 model Scott Patron eRide 900 ST Tuned.

First ride out last weekend at Hamsterley Forest………MIND BLOWN!

I purposely bought a bike that will always be much more capable than I will ever be. Saving over £6k from the original list price and the spec of the Patron was something I couldn’t walk away from.

So that’s me. That’s my bike.

I’d love to hear from anyone who is also just starting out, anyone who has owned a Patron and their experiences with it and hear about their journey into middle aged mountain biking. lol.

Cheers,

Neil.

Hello & Welcome Neil,
I’ve just turned 57, pulled some of the pension, purchased , secondhand Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon Comp, from a friend of the wife’s at her work, Came with a few nice upgrades.
Method in my madness, raced for many years on the Road, and Mountainbikes 80’s- 90’s.
Still have my , Mountain Goat WhiskeyTown Racer, with Suntour MD.
But unfortunately , earlier this year had an X-ray, on my left hip, Severe Osteoarthritis , so within 4 months, I was in Hospital, Full Hip Replacement ,
So now a proud owner of a New Hip, and a Specialized Ebike for Physio…👍💪

Hey Neil. Also have a Patron, a 920. It's my second Scott. Great bike, only issues I've had are with Bosch, but nothing serious. I'm kinda a leisurely rider, never in a hurry, always looking for the next coffee and cake opportunity, and the 920 works really well for me. Don't leave eco much, so the battery lasts for days.

Hello Neil and welcome to the site I am a 67 year old man and last November I retired and used some of my pension to buy a Scott strike 920 and have been riding it all over the summer and I have to say I have enjoyed every minute of the rides I have been out on it has been amazing.
I last had a bike 20 years ago and just used it at weekends due to work and found it hard climbing hills and being out on long rides so gave up and sold the bike and never got back into the saddle again until I retired.
I find having a motor on the bike is amazing and steep climbs and hills are not a problem and its great riding miles from home getting out into the countryside and enjoying it again I highly recommend people to invest in a ebike and enjoy riding it I think it was worth every penny I spent and look forward to long days riding out now I am retired.

Ahhh, a real kindred spirit! lol. Great to hear from you. I had a car pull out in front of me in between Windermere and Kendal back in 2003. Spleen burst wide open, broken pelvis and many other injuries………that lot added to the other side of my pelvis being broken after a hard high-side at Croft previously……obviously spelled out at least one hip replacement! lol.

Can I just say that having your replacement done if anything like myself, is life changing my mate. 🙌🏻

Kudos on the Mountain Goat by the way 👍🏻

Was chatting with a few of the old BMX crew from back in the early-mid 80’s and how we wished we still had them now. The old school stuff is worth more than gold these days.

It’s great to hear that you’re getting out and about so much and yeah, the up’s are great now, as well as the ‘downhill stuff……..but it’s by no means a free ride. It’s a genuine work out if you want it to be. Please keep in touch and let me know how you’re getting on and any tips or hints for riding now that autumn/winter is pretty much with us would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Hey. How’s it going? All good I hope?

Pleased you’re happy with the Scott bikes buddy. I guess every brand is going to have their own foibles from time to time.

What were the issues with Bosch, if you don’t mind me asking?

I don’t think I’d consider running any other brand of motor (in my limited experience) to be honest.

The Connect/Kiox 300 system seems to be a great setup and the amount of information I can get from it about my health status while riding is pretty impressive.

I’ve just purchased the Connect Module so I can relay all my ride data back to the Mrs in real time so she’s not worrying about me taking another heart wobble when I’m out. Or if I do, at least she’ll know about it and exactly where I am. Lol.

Highside: Too much throttle mid corner-light up rear tyre until full left lock is obtained-shut throttle, instant rear tyre grip regained-regret at ones leisure while being shovelled up off circuit on the way to hospital. Then endure months of people telling you that you should have kept it pinned and low sided it/rear wheel steered it and stood it up etc etc 🤣 Eejits! Haha.

Also shattered both wrists in that one, 5 piece compound fracture of my left forearm, que loads of external fixators, halo-rings etc.

I could never get that complex/entry into the hairpin at Croft put together that didn’t cost me at least 5-10 seconds a lap. 🤦🏻‍♂️

You’re kidding me! a TZ250! 😍 A proper bike from a legendary time in bike racing. Absolutely loved the old stroker series racing. Nothing was boring back then.

From the 125’s, 250’s to the mad 500’s. Everything was just so analog and ferrel. Widow-makers springs to mind. 🙈😬

And the Outlaws! Wow! Loving hearing this……bringing back some great memories!

Hi bud

Welcome to the site
I’m also a “mature” rider @63 who also used some of my pension pot to fund my emtb.
I could have/should have held my nerve and bought a cheaper and more powerful bike but realistically there ain’t many birthdays and Xmas’s left at my age, plus my arthritic knees won’t get better so I decided to bite the bullet last July, went electric and every ride is fun again.Hope you enjoy every moment too.👍

Hi mate,

Great to hear from you it’s definitely not just me that’s suffering from various body parts that need a bit of attention but there’s definitely something we’re all connected by, raiding that pension pot and buy something ridiculously expensive that’s not a Porsche…..lol. 🤣

Really pleased to hear you’re enjoying every ride out and joking aside, they may be a bit pricey, but they are definitely an investment and a great way to get out there (and back again) to places where you’d never take an analogue bike.
