Front hub issue

Hi, my front hub is toast and needs replacement, the bike shop told me to just replace the whole wheel but seems excessive as the wheel and spokes themselves are perfect. Any reason for this? I feel that replacing the hub would be cheaper.

Also, any aftermarket wheel I can buy if I go this route? Or should I stick with the giant am? Let me know when you get a chance and thanks in advance!

Hahaha, sorry, yes front hubs are cheap, rebuilding a wheel unless you're doing it yourself, will probably cost more than just buying one.

Can you not just buy new bearings for it?

I tried, but it was supposed to be cartridge bearing but the were loose ball bearings. I did the whole service but it looks like there’s something wrong with the actual hub. This is why I thought to just replace to hub with a cartridge bearings one.

The only moving parts in a front hub are the bearings. There are two main kinds of bearings in wheel hubs, sealed cartridge or cup and cone. Sealed cartridges are easily changed but cup & cone bearings rely on the body of the hub itself to work. If dirt & dust get into the bearings, it can wear away the cup the bearings sit inside. If that happens, the hub is done & you have to replace it.

According to Giant, the front hub fitted on your bike from factory is an eTracker boost 110x15, if that has sealed cartridges, any bike shop should be able to replace them in minutes for pennies. If it's cup & cone, I'd be buying a new wheel as the easiest solution since you would have to replace the hub anyway & that involves disassembling the wheel & rebuilding it with a fresh hub & at that point it becomes uneconomic.
