What tyres are people using

Hi all I’m new to forum I’ve just recently purchased a Specialized Levo comp 2022 love it so far but on my first ride I only went for 8miles and my rear side wall split which I was really surprised at as was only going down canal walkways nothing to bad, I’m planning to tubeless anyway. I was also wondering what tyres people are using and recommend with stronger side walls thanks in advance

I fitted a pair of Pirelli eMTB 2.6" tyres to my Gen 2 Levo. Super tough feeling tyres but they are right on the limit for clearance in the back. I've replaced it with a 2.4 Super Trail Big Betty but not given it a proper outing yet. It came with Michelin DH34 which seemed bomb proof but weigh a ton!

Truth...or a motor oil debate. The places I ride my Rail 7 are full of rocks, drops, cactus, and mesquite thorns. I ride fairly aggressively, and I have to use what basically comes down to a DH level tire. Even on my 2009 pedal-only SC Nomad I had to run a DH tire on the rear to get it to live.

Now, obviously where and how you ride will/can make a big difference. On the Rail I'm running Maxxis DHF and DHR tires with the extra protection classifications they offer...run tubeless of course. Being that the bike is an emtb, I don't really find a penalty to speak of running the extra weight. OP, which ever tire choice you make, it might be advisable to go just a hair more robust on the durability level to give yourself a safety buffer. Flats suck, and destroyed tires via sidewall rips are even worse...and expensive.

My first ride on the Rail with the OEM Bontrager XR5 Team issue tires resulted in a cut/destroyed rear tire, and that tire isn't a wimpy XC tire by any means...it's about a 900+ gram tire.

A 900 gram tyre is a wimpy tyre (imo).

LOL!...well, notice I did say "XC". I believe my Maxxis Minion 2.6/29 DHRII is the one that weighs 1050g. It's been bulletproof. I think the only step above that one is the DD/Double Down DH version at neary 1500g. I haven't had to go that route yet...LOL! We did just put one of those DD's on a customer's new Nomad in the 27.5 size and it was a heavy beast even at 2.4 width.

Edit to correct: My rear tire is that 3CT/EXO at about 1174g...only slightly an XC tire.

Maxxis DD (Double Down) and DH (Downhill) are not the same.

Ah ha...I see that...60 vs 120 TPI. Hadn't noticed that.

Curently got a Schwalbe Magic Mary on the front and a Big Betty on the rear

A set of Assegai are waiting to go on both front and rear in the next few months

Maxxis Assegui DD front and rear.

I’ve only tried the Perreli and Bontrager. But now it’s only Maxxis Assigia.

Schwalbe Magic Mary (F) and Big Betty (R). Both are Super Trail casing, tubeless, without inserts (yet).

I ride Continental Kryptotal FR+RE with enduro casing.

From my personal experience and from what I have heard from others the new Continental tires are way better than maxxis. The difference in grip is massive. I'm riding kryptotal with enduro casing.

The tyres have way stronger side walls as well and you really notice that when putting the tyres on. It's alot of work compered to some that you can get on in few seconds. You will need tyre levers. The extra work is totally worth it. I ride with tubes and some of my friends ride them tubeless but I haven't heard anyone saying they want to go back after trying kryptotals. Other than wishing they would be little easier to install. I'm not sure if the trouble is with enduro casing only and other Continental tyres are easier to install but I strongly suggest giving them a try.

Maxxis Assegai DD (f) and dhr II (r) also Spesh butcher (f) and eliminator (r) on a second bike ( both combos work well for me)

I have been running the Maxxis Assegai WT 3C on my bike tubeless. Did bikepark wales last weekend and I ride pretty hard which usually ends with punctures. None with these this time round.

I use tubeless Maxxis Assegai front, Minion DHR II rear in DH casings, super strong tyres

Loving my Continental Krytotals front and rear for So Cal conditions

I have read lot of positive reviews about Schwalbe tacky Chan for emtb.

If you're just a 'touring' type rider put a DH casing tyre with a slightly harder compound to reduce resistance and give you better wear.
A Michelin DH34 front and back should be the perfect balance for your riding

For the rear, schwalbe Eddy currents is as close to unpuncturable as the is, but heavy, otherwise any of their tyre in super gravity will work well.

Currently running a vittoria e-mazza, pretty optimistic about its durability, and can be found cheap.

I don't recommend maxxis or continental as rear tyres, they tear and wear much faster than other brands in my experience. Great for front tyres though.

I Have Maxxis Assegai on the front and Disector on the Trek Fuel exe 9.8 and Maxxis DHF and DFR on the Liv Intrigue Advance Pro. Read up on tires (tyes in your universe) because there are different sidewall compositions, etc. and all the little letters in the name will define that. The more robust, the heavier the tire. But it's that or a split sidewall.

Can’t beat Michellin I find. Had e wild front and rear, just replaced for DH22 rear and DH34 front and very impressed. I ride the Wrekin mainly which is very rocky with wet roots
