I have a Rail 5 with same brakes as you. I have done 2,500km on them and they have always been completely silent. I have replaced two sets of pads on the back and one set on front as well as the rear rotor all with same parts as orignal (resin pads). I have had no problems with them.

100% agree, this is a bad idea and only likely to cause you trouble in the future, just do it properly. Also you are missing the best part of being able to shift under full power

Hmm, if the Hope hub is correct then the SRAM derailleur is way out (about 1mm) I don't think that is likely, I expect SRAM calibrate it in house to much less than that, each micro adjust is about 0.2mm so it should be accurate to that. Fortunately the Hope hub measures wider than it should be...
