I'm sure the HRP60 is improved but it sounds like the ride experience is nearly the same. I think the larger battery would be the biggest difference.

Don't know about the warranty but TQ has a document with the error codes HERE.
Maybe you already know this, but it states: ERR 04B0 DRV HW Drive Unit mechanical error. Check if anything is stuck or wedged in the chainring. Contact your TQ dealer if the error still occurs.
I have some of the same questions regarding the hardware vs software. I assume the tool is a simple hardware interface and won't function without the software.
TQ has instructions here but I'm also interested if you can register as a non-dealer.

My wife's display did that, but it would turn on if we plugged the charger into it. Plugging the charger into the bike would wake the screen. (The charger didn't need to be plugged into the wall.) We would unplug the charger and the bike would function normally until it was turned off...
