Trail Etiquette ..!!!!

In most areas of the US, "defensive use" of pepper spray/OC spray is legal to use on people and domestic pets. Using bear-spray or insect-spray is not usually considered appropriate for defensive purposes however, different jurisdictions have different rules/laws.
My friends daughter was going cycling through Europe 2 years ago.He cycled to airport to see her off. She had been in Europe recently and came home with pepper spray in luggage . Going through security in Aberdeen she was arrested and locked up on terrorist charges , classed as a fire arm in UK . Fast forward a few months expensive lawyer etc judge seen sense and said this should never have came to court and threw it out.

Similar happened to my mates wife (a Swede) who was bringing more stuff home after moving here with him from Sweden.

Fortunately, the customs people just confiscated it and explained the law here, which seemed a much more even handed approach than what happened to your friends daughter.

Yes he was gutted when it happened. Got away with it. But that would still leave her with a criminal record. She was hoping to be a teacher.

Then there's the 9mm pelletized version. On early morning rides in the Wasatch, I usually carry because I'm not at the top of the food chain.
It's just a 150 lb kitty and he wants to play with his food (which is you).

From my perspective, non-lethal items for self-defense should not be banned anywhere. People should have the right to protect themselves and without a suitable "tool", vulnerable people like women, older people, diminutive people, handicapped (or whatever the politically-correct term is this week), etc. stand little chance in the face a large person or a group.

Then some groups end up using it for amusement or, worse, to harass others.

No, thanks. On this side of the Atlantic, we tend to prefer education and proper law enforcement. I sincerely hope it stays that way.

Strange rules in UK.

😂
I had a colleague, a petite, very friendly, and eloquent older woman who regularly traveled to England for business. Shortly after 9/11, she checked in at London airport with colleagues as usual. She only had a handbag with her and, in a moment of humor, answered the question "Do you have any weapons with you?" with "Sure, a pump-action shotgun, in my handbag!" The result: Despite the officers' understanding and sympathy, the bureaucratic machinery kicked into gear – airport police -> handcuffs -> overnight stay in jail -> prisoner transport to court in the morning -> conviction and order to leave the country immediately. Everyone was understanding and sympathetic to the obvious misunderstanding. The problem: she was blacklisted by the airlines. Somehow, she managed to get home, and we had a good laugh, even though it wasn't really funny..

Since then, I don't make any jokes at security anymore, no matter what the other person does.

Pepper spray is permitted for self-defense in countries like Germany (if labeled for animals) and Italy, but banned or heavily restricted for civilians in Belgium, the Netherlands, UK, and Norway. Always check specific local regulations before carrying, as improper use can lead to criminal charges.
Nope, it is definitely legalin Germany, to defend against humans and animals. In any case I would use it only if a freakin dog comes to close. What is why I stop in some distance to grab and hold the spray in the pocket and see what happens next.

The victims of all the rape gangs could have used an equalizer.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

It’s an understandable conclusion, but facts and logic point in a different direction:
  1. In Italy, for example, around 60% of rapes are committed by current or former partners. In those situations, it’s hard to imagine a woman being able or willing to use something like pepper spray against someone she knows.
  2. In many cases, assaults happen so quickly that there’s simply no time to react, retrieve a spray, and use it effectively. Men are not bears (they are much worst).
  3. On the other hand, legalizing these tools more broadly would also make them accessible to groups who could use them offensively, not defensively.
That said, I’m fully aware that attitudes differ across the Atlantic, and I’m not trying to convince you or some people from Arizona. So perhaps this is simply one of those cases where it’s best to agree to disagree.

Anything that assists with the headphones zombie’s….. normally anything smaller than a ship’s foghorn is ineffective….. whatever they are listening to tends to atrophy their frontal cortex.
the atrophied frontal cortex tends to engage 'headless chicken' mode regardless

Hey! Skoda must have heard your wish! Not Big Ben but Big Bell:

Well the Timber bell is not very loud and you need to be on rough ground before it works really , I thought it was a battery operated one . I end up saying ting ting half the time or if I'm on old rail track it's choo choo

When riding around the brain-dead, make sure you choose your path wisely! I was trying for a PR when I came up on a walker, yelled passing on right as they had monopolized the left side of the path. Much to my dismay the right side had two freshly cut truck tire ruts that were about 2' deep each. ALMOST went over the bars but saved it and kept going. My riding area also has "exercise rocks" placed randomly just off the main trails so fitness minded idiots can get a workout whilst walking. If you go slightly offline and don't see it in time you will go OTB. DAMHIK....
