One elderly owner! 😊 Never raced or rallied!
This bike is in excellent condition. It has done 3852 miles. The Fox Float DPX2 Performance Elite shock has been serviced three times by TF Tuned (TFT) and the Fox 38 Performance Elite (Grip 2 damper) fork four times by TFT (The last one was Feb’26). The Shimano EP8 motor has given zero trouble, but I sent it for a regular service to E-Motor Repairs. I got it back in Mar’26. I have kept a maintenance log (copy available), since I got the bike and I can tell you the age of every part on the bike and when it was fitted. I have the receipts for the TFT services and the E-Motor Repairs service.

I do all the running adjustments and easy maintenance myself (lubing, chain & cassette replacements, lever bleeds, brake pad and tyre replacement, tubeless set up etc). But mostly I send it to a local bike shop, always by the owner. Any serious interest and I will provide the contact details. Ask for him and he will give you his opinion on the bike and answer any questions that you may have. I got it back from him last week and at my request, he had fitted new stainless Slickwire inners and new outer cables for the shifter and dropper, he also checked the frame and wheel bearings; all were OK. He also checked the spoke tension and fixed a slight wheel wobble that I hadn’t felt. The wheelset is the original DT Swiss Spline HX1501 “Spline One” (29”F - 27.5”R). The front tyre is a Maxxis Assegai 29 x 2.5 3C Maxx Grip TR DH. The rear tyre is a 27.5 x 2.6 WTB Trail Boss TCS Tough Fast TriTec E25. The brakes & transmission are all Shimano XT.

Apart from consumable items and the usual running adjustments, the whole bike has been problem free since Day One. The Shimano removable 630-Whr battery still offers 95-mile range in Eco, as it did on day one. Complete with the 6 Amp charger.

Note:
  • The original Merida saddle along with its custom toolkit will be refitted to the bike.
  • I will remove the Ergon grips and refit some lock-on grips with red collars.
  • I removed the original Lezyne headlight because I never used it and the wires were fouling the headset area. I still have it and it comes with the bike.
Any questions? Just ask me on Direct Messages.
If you need more pics, just let me know what and I'll post them.

Reason for sale: I was ill recently for several months and the weather was crap. It gave me too much time to look at other bikes that I might buy! :giggle:

Give me some feedback please. :)
Overpriced, crap colour, poor choice of tyres, key information missing........

What?

It's tough out there Steve.

Quick look at a well known auction site shows the same bike with 550 miles on offer for considerably less than your asking price. It's a buyer's market now unless you're selling a unicorn.

Used bike market in general has been bust for a couple of years now. Out of warranty emtbs especially hard to sell these days. Manufactures and retailers are/were overstocked with many 2023/24/25 models that they are still trying to get rid of so are offering very good prices as a result. That's what you are competing against.

People in general have much less disposable income these days also.

Good looking bike, love the colour, (reminds me of my old BSA motorbike), lot of miles for an emtb but if I was back in the UK I would be very interested.

Hi Steve,
Did you mention the size? And if EP801?
As others have said, its a tough market for 2nd hand bikes.

It's a great looking bike. But .......... Older Shimano Motor with lots of miles, is going to be a tough sell, no matter the maintenance.

Have you tried Facebook Marketplace ? I got all my enquires through there, including the guy who bought mine. You'll get lots of low ball offers and scammers. But someone may offer something you are prepared to accept.

End of the day. Whatever comes along. Just sell it and move on. Or, if you have the space. Keep it as a spare.

Beware Facebook market place, I sold a sofa bed on there yesterday & the buyer turned up to collect it in a Toyota Aygo. 🤷‍♂️

Steve, you're also light on detail. Battery, drive train, brakes, suspension etc. People will want to see the specs more than how often you oil the chain. And photos, lots of photos.

Maybe they were buying it with the intension of it staying at yours and they'd discovered a cheap way of finding accommodation ??🛏️🏡

Thanks to all that have given advice. :)

Initially I had assumed that people would be looking at the spec online. Previously I have seen great long detailed specs and I was trying to avoid that, maybe I have overdone the brevity (for once!)

I will take on board all advice.
(Pause for thinking on and creating anew). :coffee:

I've sold a good few bikes over the years and generally get the price I want for them. The key for me has been lots of detailed photos and a full list of the spec and any upgrades including how old the upgrades are vs the rest of the bike.

Here's an example of the last bike I sold. It was gone within 2 days of listing it in various places and I only had to reduce it by £50 to take into account the buyer was coming by train to collect it, plus my new bike had already arrived and I needed the space. In my head £800 was what I realistically expecting to see it for so was still £50 up.

For pricing I usually look on eBay for similar models and change the filter to only show sold item, then price mine accordingly taking into consideration the condition and any upgrades or spares I'm including. There are a few used MTB websites you can check too, but they tend to list them for more than market value.

I then usually list them on eBay, Pinkbike, FB Marketplace, GumTree and various forums (namely Singletrackworld, and here more recently).

Best of luck, it's a lovely bike!

@MeatBike Thanks for the feedback. I have advertised all my previous bikes on eBay, but eBay no longer accept ebikes for sale from private owners, only from a business. They must have been getting too many stolen bikes, but I don't know the real reason. I used to put a dozen pictures and and loads of detail, along with total honesty. To have that sales route removed is a pain. I'll have to use Pinkbike or some other route. I have sold a few by word of mouth.

I will be updating or replacing the current post shortly.

EDIT at 16:00 GMT, just updated.

That's weird, I'm a private seller and it just let me list my Orbea Rise for sale (which I quickly cancelled).

There are hundreds of other ebikes from private sellers for sale too.

If they're cracking down on private ebike sales I suspect it would be due to "battery panic" if anything (despite all the other tat they allow with questionable batteries).

That's great I'll give it a go. Many thanks for that. :)

I don't think there is much of a market for older ebikes. Especially Shimano powered ones. I've got the same bike with similar mileage as you (alloy however), and I've toyed with the idea of selling it, but in reality it's going to end up a spare as it's not worth anything.

The other thought I had was to buy a Velduro frame only. And then just swap all the parts over. Even the shock is the right size.... Might then get a few bucks for the Shimano motor and battery too

You may be correct @Brent8275 . I suspect that if I broke up the bike for parts I would get a lot more money for it, it's all premium parts. However, I just got word yesterday that I am going to have to wait until July, maybe later to get my replacement bike. So the sale is off right now. I will get my eBay sales pitch ready though.

Not sure what to do now, there are some useful posts on this thread that I'd like to keep for others to benefit from. I think I will add "withdrawn from sale for a while" to the title.

That looks lovely Steve! 😃👍
That is nice of you to comment. :)
I was looking for MX wheelset, Fox 38 Performance fork (160mm)and similar grade shock (150mm). I wanted a larger battery than my current 630W-hr. The standard 600W-hr on the Vala gives me all I need most of the time, but the 250W-hr range extender does for the rest of the time. My knees are getting worse and I need a bit more oomph, so the boosted Bosch Gen 5 does that too. I don't need 1000Watts, so 750 also hits the spot. I haven't ridden a Sram T-type transmission , so I've got that to look forward to. It's a long time since I've not had Shimano brakes, so the Sram Mavens could be an interesting change. The Maxxis tyres are old friends. I love the overall look of the bike.

What would make it better?:love:
1) The Performance suspension to be Performance Elite. I have that on my current bike and I love both fork and shock. I accept that they are much better than my skill set can fully employ, but I can tell they are good and I fully appreciate them. I need all the help I can get!
2) The green is MUCH better then the alternative (IMO) drab grey. For me that is a "no buy" colour. I would have preferred a satin black, maybe gloss. Or a bright red with black patches to slim it even further on the eye. I suspect that many share my views because the last time I looked there were quite a few grey ones left, only one green and they wanted top money and they were a long way away from me.

I am being picky, I know!

Great colour, nice motor too (y)

Out of interest, what size bike and how tall are you?
Good question!!
Because of the size issue ,I lost out on a great deal, 20% off!
The bike shop said that at 6'1". I needed an XL. I have been riding mtbs for 18 years and I've always been a Large. My analysis of the geometry chart and experience with previous bikes and their geometry charts led me to conclude that a Large was still right for me, just! But the XL was too big. On the basis that it will be easier to make a bike bigger than it is to make one smaller, I opted for the Large. But I still had a nagging doubt; it was a lot of money to spend, why not secure a test ride? The bike shop knew that one of the local Forestry England rangers was riding a size large, so they would ask him if I could borrow it for 20-30 mins.

A week went by without any contact, so I called in next time I was there and asked who it was that had the bike. It turned out that I knew him and had borrowed a bike from a few years ago when I was about to lead a guided ride in his forest and my bike wouldn't start. The Specialized Kenovo he let me borrow was a good fit, so I thought the Santa Cruz Vala might also fit. I rang him straight away to discover that he was on hols previous week and the current one. He answered "yes, of course" to my request.

On the appointed day, I turned up at 11:00 and returned it at 15:30. I had decided to wash it before handover, as it was going into his van and it was really mucky!
I very soon confirmed that the fit was good, but then came the experimentation with the Bosch motor! I liked the motor, but not the AXS shifting or dropper post! I thought that I would like it and swiftly love it, but I didn't. That was an itch scratched at least. Fortunately, the one I wanted had cable-shifted T transmission.

All this hanging about and waiting for a test bike meant that the bike shop I was doing the deal with now could not get a bike until Jul'26 at the earliest, but if I wanted to go elsewhere, no hard feelings. But the "20% off" bike that was a 3.5 hour drive away had gone! So here I wait. But at least I have had it confirmed that the bike I have ordered is exactly what I'm looking for. Size large and no AXS. My Forestry England guy has decided to sell the SC Vala with a few hundred miles on the clock as he has a garage full of bikes and hardly rides it. It is probably on eBay now, although I haven't looked. He should do well, as there are almost no new ones about.

How very interesting, glad you got exactly the bike you wanted! And avoiding AXS shifting and dropper was a bullet well dodged (IMO).

Did you win lottery Steve ?. Very nice. I have Maven brakes brilliant I think, had hopes for past four bikes just as good and their the bronze ones. Enjoy.

No lottery win, sad to say, but maybe the Premium Bonds will come to my rescue!
I am 75 in a few months and my life target (since I was 54) is to get to 90 and still be riding a bike. It occurred to me recently that there is only 15 years left!!!!! :(

So I'm going ski-ing. (SKI = Spending the Kid's Inheritance) :ROFLMAO:

I have not been profligate. I will have had my current bike five years in May this year and apart from changing the usual contact points and a rear tyre spec change early on, I have only spent on consumables. No upgrades!

The wear and tear on my body is accelerating and I know that my knees will thank me for the extra torque and power that the Bosch Gen 5 CX will provide.

Damn that's a great life target! Pretty inspirational to be honest.
Enjoy the new bike!
