Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Yeah it's looking good to be honest. Speedbox have said it's fine and VOLspeed have tested on 100km with no issues. I've got one on my cube and done 50km this weekend, no issues.

Yes speedbox have said it's okay to update

It seems that SpeedBox are not that sure it'll be ok!
I'd like to see SpeedBox 3.0 user's with 500+ miles on this new firmware before I take the plunge.

Hello,
as far as we know there should not be any major changes in the new update so SpeedBox 3.0 should work fine.
I would not recommend to update new Bosch software as it is working fine for you so far. If you still want to update your bike please remove SpeedBox before updating and reinstall it back again.
If any trouble occures please contact me.

Hi George like wise question Any news on how the new 85Nm update now Performance Line CX from MY20: Version 1.1.2.0. affects the Volspeed?

I receive my new Canyon Grail on 8 this week : Grail:ON CF 8 Im really keen to fit VolspeedV3.

I will gladly buy from you guys but hoping for a little comforting news from you as most of the threads seem to suggest it works fine ... mostly. Some errors though

Second question .. is it safer to limit the speed to say around 35/38kph? is there any logic in this being less likely to trigger an error?

Cheers Steve

Well George I am at two 504 ERRORS .
One from previous firm ware on CX 2020 . One from updated 85 NM firm ware . Not a happy chappy .

1st time I took it back to the shop and had the upgrade after the 504 msg . Mechanic asked me if I tried to make it go faster . I said no .
About 6 weeks later . I had driven 2.5 hours and stayed the night to go ride at a bike park . When I turned the controller on 504 ! Had to pack up . Cancel the next night at the BnB . Not a fun drive home .

Speed Box 3 .

Rode very occasionally [ once a week for 6 weeks ] at 60 KM/H on long road descents . Only for a 1 -2 minutes . Generally 35 KM top speed on down hill trails . Derestrict was to 99 .

Sounds like you've got a faulty box. Did you buy from us? Send an email to [email protected] if so.

Thanks for ordering! Yes the VOLspeed is compatible with the latest software. In terms of speed it doesn't make a difference whether you set it to 30kmh or 50kmh.

Ok thanks George. So low speed Settings to match US limits have no impact in your opinion right ? Also Have you any update on Volspeed v3 tested bosch bikes with mileage covered Since your post in July re new software update? Thanks for the speedy response

Hi George,

Are you (or the companies that make the derestricting boxes) aware of what the mechanism is that bosch use to detect tuning? It seems to me that nobody making/selling these things can currently guarantee that they work without eventually causing an error - or have I got that wrong? I'd love to be wrong on this - as I think I'd like one of these devices, but not with the risk of triggering limp mode at the worst possible time and making the bike effectively useless for a period of time.

I suspect that bosch are measuring the electrical power draw of the motor and if that goes above some parameter they have set (lets say for example 400w) over a pre determined period of time (or distance) then they trigger the anti tampering error. If they use this kind of mechanism to detect derestricting then there's no way these boxes can get round it without significant changes to how the boxes work - ie intercepting the power draw measurement and replacing it with a lower value. Or maybe speedbox have done something clever when it does its countdown, hence lowering the watts/per hour (or mile etc).

It'd be good to get confirmation from the manufacturers of these products that they do actually work correctly without triggering a fault code because at the moment I'm a bit sceptical that they fully work. Although it looks like speedbox might have a better chance of working than volspeed.

This anti tampering approach would fit with the fact that the earlier bosch firmware would sometimes trigger the anti tampering even though the motor had not been altered, ie bosch set the power value or the time to too small a value.

Any views from your self on the above?

Hello,

I was a bit late replying here but hopefully this helps you. From experience the 504 error is caused by 3 main reasons;

1. Running old software on a gen 4 motor
2. Rider not allowing the countdown to complete on the SB3
3. Riding at excessive speed all the time

I hope this helps, for the reasons above this is why we recommend the Volspeed V3. You have control of the max speed and it also doesn't require a countdown.

Any other questions, give me a shout :)

On the motor-unit you can remove the 'main power' connector first. This has the same effect as removing the battery
