My god R120 this is proper coincidence

Your first pic is from the 2007 Chatsworth meet, and I do believe that is my car in the far right of the picture.

The pink flip in this colour was only obvious in bright sunshine.

That looks very similar to my 5.0. Though from what I remember, mine was a boring mono colour. It didn't get used often and when I did decide I wanted to use it there was the painful and cumbersome extraction via removal of rear licence plate then time upside down in the passenger foot well - before getting fed up and taking something else out instead. Still, when it did work it was hilarious fun which was endlessly entertaining in the ice. :eek: ?

Anyway, far more importantly .. where's the rear triangle ? is it getting it's own thread ?

Mine looked very similar... until the sun came out

Owned it for nine years with little issues, by far the most "entertaining" car I have owned.

Sorry Rob... back to your fantastic Cheeb project (it looks great in TVR flip)
Loving the tvr pics, I used to have a cerbera 4.2 v8 back in the very early 2000's, I loved that car.

I would suspect the electrics are better on the Bafung than were on the TVR's. :)
Not forgetting the imperial fittings for the front brakes and metric at the back..

When I worked for a motor factors years ago a TVR specialist in the same town used to visit us regularly hoping we'd identify the brand of the part he'd taken off a car to fix and be able to match it.

Jeez !!! That was a FEATURE !! They set about with the intention of making an international sports car brand. By building it like that, it meant that someone, anywhere in the world, at least had a chance to fix half your brakes ! :unsure:

I never had a TVR, I always loved the looks, but the horror stories always put me off. Were they really that bad?

I think they varied over the years. Keep in mind they were small production in a shed in Blackpool. Road testing was just blatting down the M55 as fast as possible at night..... but then who didn't ..

The early ones were just kit cars .. The "S" ? I think it was the S .. with the 2.8 then crappier 2.9 ford on a space frame was simple and fun, but not particularly quick and for some reason not that reliable. I had a friend break down in one and almost freeze to death.

The rover engine used in the V8's wasn't that bad . They just cut a few corners along the way and had general financial issues..

In it's day the 420 SEAC was a bit special. I could never work out why anyone bought the 350, when the 390 was 10 times the car.

A buddy of mine ended up with the Clarkson Top Gear car (which was not standard tune) - which got thrashed along toseland straight by Jezza. A great bit of road with a slight yump half way along where you could get good air at about 140 on a bike. Though last time I spoke with him, which was years ago, he was looking for a new engine..

I don't think I ever really had any problems with mine. It just needed an electrical cut out as the battery was flat all the time. It was fun but I had other toys and faster toys, so it never really got used to it's full potential.

We'll just re-start the TVR thread here .. did anyone have a black TVR ? (not charcoal black - like burnt out - actually I almost wrecked mine on a track day because the fire truck - my brake marker - had gone to put out out a BBQ TVR - don't use mobile objects as your brake markers !).

I loved mine. Never broke down on me but niggles that you'd expect with a handbill car with limited quality in mouldings. My roof leaked for a while until I adjusted the windows - it was a bit of a pain because the floor was completely watertight and would occasionally retain 2 to 3 inches of water!

Took the dash off once to re-wire an indicator. There were lumps of roughly but wood that had been glued to the body to mount the dash on.

Great fun to drive. Took it round Silverstone and down to Le Mans and back and just made me smile. Ever my wife liked it!

A good service was expensive because it genuinely needed a lot of niggles being put right every time. But, unlike modern cars, you could really tell when it had been serviced well.

It got me completely addicted to British cars and led to a couple of others ...

I once convinced the wife that as a 2+2 a Cerbera was a family car...

It was only when one of my mates pointed out that she'd be the one driving it most of the time and mid-300 horsepower and no driver aids was a recipe for disaster that I relented and bought something sensible. ?

Sadly not ... The top one is, I think, a Tuscan S , the lower one is a Sagaris.

These were in the period when they'd moved away from the Rover v8 base.

As pretty as the Sagaris is, and it sounded like god in a spitfire. It was developed and produced during a difficult time. I think assembly quality was not good, usability wasn't great - probably one of those things you just love because you become passionate about it.

If you think in the early days TreVoR Wilkinson 1946 !!!! Founded TVR (Trevcar motors at the time) and built their first chassis in 1949.

When BMW bought rover, they feared BMW would withdraw the Rover V8, so they setup with Al Mellings to make their own engines - the AJP8 and AJP6. Quite impressive really. Though from what I remember they had a lot of reliability issues which were down to assembly and poor/cheap component choices (sound like Renaut's sister company). At the time I think there was a lot of blame thrown in Mellings direction, but there seems to be quite a few high mileage ones out there now, so who knows.... maybe someone here ??

Anyway, just found this which explains way more than I remember or ever knew. Quite an interesting history and worthy of a read !!


I think I've only owned three black cars .. a Ford Capri S when I was 17 .. my first car - those were the days.. An old 911 , kinda wish I still had that just for some simplistic rawness .. and a prodrive Subaru a great all round practical day to day car and I think all my Subaru's were the best snow cars you could buy (with winter tyres on) Did a winter tour of Scotland in that one and it was the dogs danglies. I probably saw @Gary cycling in the snow, sweating, with his vest on ..

An amusing bit of TVR History from the wiki article .. A time in history when women tried to make themselves seem more attractive to men by lying on hot cars ! Fortunately, the world has moved on in 50 years and you don't see anything like that anymore.

"At the British International Motor Show at Earls Court in 1970, TVR hired model Helen Jones to pose nude on the TVR stand, and the resulting commotion immediately generated more publicity for the company. This advertising technique was used again at the 1971 show, when Helen Jones was accompanied by a second model, Susan Shaw. The reaction was even greater in 1971, and amid the chaos of the public response, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders threatened to ban TVR from the show. This, of course, drew even more attention to the brand. The 1971 show also marked the appearance of the M Series prototype bodywork and the prototype SM estate car."

How did you find the Noble ? I had a neighbour who constantly tormented himself with the idea of getting one, I don't think he ever did though.

I absolutely loved it. Used it daily in the summer and it was very reliable. Like the TVR, it needed good regular looking after but nothing was difficult to do on it. It was fabulous on track, particularly with sticky tyres. Unlike the Elise, it had the power for the longer tracks so the straights at Silverstone and Spa were just brilliant.

To coin a phrase from this forum, it was very analogue. It had power steering and LSD but that was it for 'driver aids'. No ABS, traction control or computers.

If I ever had the chance to get back into fun cars again though, I'd go for an Exige or Elise. I've been fortunate to drive quite a lot of nice cars and I reckon Lotus have got the best balance between road, track and all round usable fun. I should think that Andy's Mk1 Elise would be pretty good fun.
