Hi!

I got my motor replaced a week ago because it suddenly stopped switching on. The motor is working great, smooth and powerful but today I noticed a "new" noise. It is not the classic motor noise of this motor, it is a high pitched whining (it sounds more like a whistle to me) than increases in pitch as the assistance increases.

I think I can remember the old motor doing the same noise but only sometimes under high torque requirements. Can this be related to heat? It is really hot here this week (44ºC+).

Have you noticed something similar? I can try recording a video to show you the noise, but not sure if it will get recorded properly.

AUDIO CLIP: https://sndup.net/6wsn/giant+motor+noise.mp3

Thanks!!!

I had a weird squeeling noise that was more apparent under heavy load and starting to pedal after pausing and seemed be louder with higher assist levels which kind of sounded like you describe. Cleaning and lubing my chain made the noise go away. Not sure if you have the same thing going on.

I have added an audio clip on the first post... At the beginning is the normal noise of the motor, then the "whistle" starts... twice.

Here is another user with the same problem (yamaha motor):

I hear what you are referring to. There is a high pitch whistle over and above the normal motor whine.
I don't think it's anything to worry about. IF the motor is performing well then don't stress about it :)

Thanks for your answer. I am not too much worried about a possible future damage but it is very annoying, and it was not there on the original motor :(

The audio did not capture all the volume of the noise and it is very bad at max assistance and high cadence...

My 2020 Reign E 0 Pro just started making exactly the same whine as your audiophile. It s done 2500 km. Starts after about 40 mins of hard riding. The more power you transmit to the engine, the louder the whine. To me, its a very marked accentuation of the normal engine noise rather than a new noise. My fellow bike riders can hear my bike now from 5 m away through their helmets/ dirt track / their own bikes noise etc when we are peddaling hard. My well regarded LBS ( mainly Specialised rather than Giant sales) said ' sounded normal to us ' ( after a 100 metre ride on flat tarmac') and ' if anything happens , we have a record'.
I'll let you know ' if anything happens' . Hopefully 'if anything happens' like a major engine failure, it is not 20 km from home in a valley.
