• Warning!!

Riding a tuned or deristricted EMTB is not a trivial offence and can have serious legal consequences. Also, many manufacturers can detect the use of a tuning device or deristricting method and may decline a repair under warranty if it was modified from the intended original specification. Deristricting EMTB's can also add increased loads for motors and batteries. Riding above the local law limit may reclassify the bike as a low-powered bike, requiring insurance, registration and a number plate.

Be aware of your local country laws. Many laws prohibit use of modified EMTB's. It is your responsibility to check local laws. Ignoring it, has potential implications to trail access, and risk of prosecution in the event of an accident.

Successful warranty claims after de-restricting

Has anyone made any successful warranty claims on faulty/failed motors after de-restricting? If so what method did you use to de-restrict?

I've been running the speedbox but it keeps throwing up w011 error code. Clears on power cycle but a complete PITA when in the middle of a blast. Happens 2 or 3 times in a 15 mile cycle. Considering ditching it in favour of the STEPS unlocker method now that it supports latest firmware.

Dear Stuart,
in my experience it's not a motor issue......but it's the firmawe (4.7.0) that interferes with the speedbox.
if you downgrade it to 4.6.0 or 4.3.2 (it's simple and free) you should solve the issue.
If you want to keep the latest firmware at all costs ... yes, you can also solve with steps unlocker by changing the region and the circumference of the wheel.

Could be.. They do sell it as being comparable with v7 though.. I'll maybe try downgrading to v4.6 again. I tried once before and failed although I didn't persevere as I was too eager to get out on the thing.

I've a speedbox and W011 error appear randomly from firmware 4.7.0
Downgrade firmware is simple (I did it), there is a guide at stepsunlocker homepage......but I can help you step by step if you encounter a problem.
I've also steps unlocker with full license.

I assume the downgrade solved the problem? Thanks for the help! I'll try when I'm home in a couple weeks
