New Chainring for Turbo Levo

Hi, Spent a frustrating couple of hours trying to fit a HOPE 36T retainer ring to my TL Expert this evening. Problem I had seemed to be that the RaceFace chain bolts, socket and bolt type, were too long for the spider and chain ring width. Plus one hell of a fiddle holding the rear of the socket bolts in place even with the right tool.
I have seen other TL with Hope chainrings fitted so what am I doing wrong guys or should I just take it to my LBS?

I just fitted a 36t OoneUp, same problem. That came with washers that I used on the inside on the nuts. That solved it for me. But the chainguard can not be used anymore.
