Mixed-wheel enduro eMTB; Shimano STEPS EP8 motor with 504/630Wh battery options

The Vitus E-Sommet 2025 is the Northern Irish direct-sale brand's full-power enduro eMTB, an aluminium Horst-Link chassis built around the Shimano EP801 motor. Headline numbers: 170 mm fork, 167 mm rear travel, Shimano EP801 at 85 Nm and 600 W peak (2.7 kg), 630 Wh removable Shimano BT-EN806-A battery, a 64.0 degree head angle, reach 435 to 518 mm across S to XL with size-and-flip-chip combinations (12 geometry rows), 24.7 kg claimed weight and £4,599 to £5,499 across three trims (VR, base, VRX). The community verdict, summed up by @R120's reference to the Pinkbike review, is that the E-Sommet was "hands down the best descending and cornering eMTB to date" at launch, "railing corners like a downhill bike", and the platform has earned a loyal community following since.
Drive system and range. The Shimano EP801 at 85 Nm and 600 W peak is the current-generation Shimano full-power unit, programmable via E-Tube and supporting AUTO/FREE SHIFT systems. The 630 Wh BT-EN806-A is removable. Real-world battery longevity is documented by @Gary's 2019 VR which "accumulated 12,000 miles with battery health degraded to 77% from original capacity", which is excellent. @gtaadicto reports about 20% range loss after 3 years on an earlier-gen external battery. Realistic range on the 630 Wh in a 24.7 kg full-power chassis is 35 to 50 km depending on assist mode and elevation. The Shimano ecosystem lacks the OTA polish of Bosch Flow App or DJI Avinox.
Geometry and handling. The 64.0 degree head angle is bang on enduro norm. Vitus offers each size with two chainstay-length flip-chip settings: short (442 mm) for nimble handling or long (460 mm) for stability. Reach progresses 435 to 518 mm across the size run with wheelbase scaling 1235 to 1345 mm at the extremes. The dual flip-chip + reach range gives 12 effective geometry rows, more configuration flexibility than most direct-sale brands offer. @R120's review notes the platform's hands-far-behind-front-axle stability courtesy of the 170 mm fork and slack front.
Build and value. Three trims with a £900 spread. VR at £4,599 with 24.8 kg is the entry point, the base and VRX at £5,499 with 24.7 kg sit at the top. The platform is a Chain Reaction Cycles/Wiggle direct-sale model with all the value-per-pound benefits of skipping the LBS markup. Standout is the price-per-kit at £5,499: getting 170/167 mm of EP801-powered full-power enduro at this price is exceptional. Questionable is the dealer support model: Vitus dealer network is limited and warranty work for Shimano motor issues may require working through the brand's online service team rather than a local LBS. @R120 has upgraded his VR with a ZEB Ultimate fork, Meg Neg shock upgrade and Galfer 220 mm front / 200 mm rear rotors, demonstrating the platform's upgrade potential.
Community-verified strengths. First, descending capability is class-leading: the Pinkbike review quoted by @R120 places the E-Sommet as "hands down the best descending and cornering eMTB to date" at launch. Second, durability: @Gary's 3-month/800-mile/230,000 ft descended report at the platform's launch is matched by his later 12,000 mile/77% battery health figure, confirming long-term ownership viability. Third, the dual flip-chip + size run gives proper fit flexibility.
Caveats and known gripes. Service support: @Tone461 notes "Shimano BT-E8016 STEPS battery delivery via DPD costs £30 due to lithium battery restrictions", making remote-bought replacements expensive. @Gary's mechanical heads-up about a rear mech hanger nut coming off mid-ride is the kind of unscheduled-shop-visit story to know about. The 24.7 kg weight is heavy by 2025 standards (sub-22 kg DJI Avinox alternatives like the Crestline RS 181 Spectre exist at similar travel). Bosch CX Gen 5 rivals (Trek Rail+, Bianchi E-Vertic FX) deliver 120 Nm at similar money.
Verdict. The E-Sommet is in current production through Chain Reaction Cycles/Vitus Bikes and represents excellent value in the 170 mm full-power enduro segment at £4,599 to £5,499. Buy it if you want a Shimano EP801-powered, 170/167 mm full-power enduro with proper 64-degree geometry and dual flip-chip flexibility at sub-£5,500. Look elsewhere if you want a Bosch CX Gen 5 with 120 Nm at similar money, a sub-23 kg lightweight DJI Avinox-equipped alternative, or a deep local dealer network. The E-Sommet remains a real grin-per-pound proposition for the right rider.
